Russ, I have that one also but it's too large to display. Maybe tomorrow I will re-size the image.

Very interesting. It's time I look in to getting some of these. For starters, what is a good entry level (grade Vs type) colonial to acquire?

WWW, I think the Colonial coins are a great coin to collect. The price is still very affordable for the age and mintage (availability) of these coins. Take a look on Ebay under "Colonial". I think you will be suprised.

There are three excellent readily available resources for collectors interested to learn about colonials:

    1) The Redbook provides a nice overview of the different colonial series, types and varieties.

    2) The Coinfacts website (www.coinfacts.com) has a very nice colonial section which has somewhat more detail than the Redbook and provides some current auction results and pricing information.

    3) The Notre Dame website (www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/index.html) has a bit more detail on the history and relevance of the different series.

I would suggest taking a look at these sources before jumping in and buying anything.

There are some great coins available for prices which are very reasonable given the age and rarity of these pieces and particularly in comparison to much more common and more recent regular US coins, but there are also pitfalls and things one needs to know before buying.

There is no graysheet for colonial coins, and the redbook pricing is woefully (WOEFULLY) out-of-date. The best and by far most accurate pricing information one can obtain for colonials is to review the recent auction prices realized for raw and slabbed coins at Stack's, American Numismatic rarities, Heritage, Superior and Goldberg.

When you have done alittle bit of homework and are ready to take the plunge, I'd say a nice transition from Federal into Colonial issues could start with a nice Washington piece like this:

Those are some nice pieces, but you need to get te Franklin press piece out of there, it isn't a colonial, just an overrated Conder token. image

Here's my favorite group of the colonials, the Massachusetts silver. Unlike many peices, which were only used for a short period or which were really English tokens, these pieces were produced in America for 30 years and circulated according to bank records into the mid 1800s. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
