Crackin' good, to be sure, but it looks like you cracked the reverse too hard... all I see is a red-X-of-Death! image

What was the plastic grade on that baby?

Yep, that blowtorch kit I got on ebay is kewl!! image

Actually, maybe some of our more seasoned UK collectors can comment on this type toning which seems prevalent on British coins, silver especially.

I know the Maundy sets can produce the vivid colours, but what of the others? Anyone know the preferred storage techniques of the Brits from a century ago?

  • Don't tell the grade Mac, let us guess for a while. Are Maundies considered Proofs or UNC?? That one looks flawless at first look, I better look again before guessing. image

Are Maundies considered Proofs or UNC??

Maundys are neither UNCs nor proofs. They are "proof-like." Most have reflective fields and strong strikes. For me it is tougher to tell early Victorian maundy pieces from their 3d counterparts because the strike even on the currency pieces is very pronounced.

The subject of this thread is not a maundy piece, but a for-circulation groat. It is the same diameter as a 3d but does not have a smooth edge around the circumfrence.

Thanks for the bagpipe link, historygeek. I'll download later at work, since I'm 'dial-up' challenged at home.

The pipes make my blood boil. I have ancestors who died for Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden.

Sadly, there are no speakers here on this computer. Maybe it's a good thing. The boss might not understand.

Actually, he might. We actually have a bagpiper on the payroll here... more than one! They play at sunset every night, out on the lawn, by the water. (At the resort I work in, not at home in the trailer park, LOL. A bagpiper might get shot at where I live.)

  • That's a 3 screamer, MacMouse! If we are guessing, I say 66 too, and hope they got the PL attributed. A star too ?

NGC must have stopped at the colour! Another good reason to free her was overgrading. They had it at MS66.....too much, IMO. There are one or two light scrapes in the obv. fields sufficient to step it down to no more than 65 territory, and 64/64+ if you consider the strike isn't super full (see earring), but maybe that little drop is never as rounded as on one of the copper types. But, the lustre picks it back up a notch, so you could say maybe it's a legit 65. The rev. is very clean, save for some light ticks under Brit's arm.

Vic and I just grade it, freeeeeeeee; MSFREE_Toned! image It also gets the MacCrimmon 'BN' designation. "How so?", you ask, "it's silver". Yep, but 'BN' stands for 'bare nekkid'. imageimage

  • Alright, another slabbed coin freed! I do dig that color.

There's something very fishy about this groat - same date (accidentally) shown during the coin-matching game last Sunday (by wybrit)

I too thought the strike was a tad too week to get a 66, especially with the marks on the coin. However, it's one seriously beautiful, FREE coin....image

Nice groats, Wybrit. Your toned groat looks like a very strong strike; stronger than mine. image

Also, it looks fairly PL; how is it 'in hand'?
