<< <i>So what are your goals for the 2004 collecting year? Who is planning to go hard for a new set? Who is planning to upgrade their winning sets? Who is planning to catch that pesky leader that always seems to stay 0.01 ahead?

Personally, I plan to upgrade my NFL Rushers set to about 8.50, keep filling holes in my 1962 Fleer PSA 8 and 1989 Score PSA 10 sets, and grab a few other upgrades here and there. I'm also dabbling with a yet-to-be-announced project.

    Joe >>

    1. upgrade my NFL Rushers set to about 8.50

Status: I'm at 8.46, one or two more upgrades will get me to 8.50

    2. keep filling holes in my 1962 Fleer PSA 8 set

Status: I've added a few more this year and have 14/88 to go

    3. keep filling holes in my 1989 Score PSA 10 set

Status: I've added a bunch more and have 26/330 to go

    4. dabbling with a yet-to-be-announced project.

Status: Still dabbling, still unannounced image

<< <i>Goal 1: Reduce the size of my collection by 50 - 80% (Don't worry -- this is mainly vending cases and other stuff that just takes up space)
Goal 2: Find those last few pesky upgrades to my 1955 Bowman set. Persuade uber-collectors to trade their 8s for my 9s to make this happen, if no other avenues present themselves.
Goal 3: Find a few of those pesky modern Mike Schmidt cards in PSA 10 grade -- preferably through own submissions. Examples include 1988 Topps and Topps Tiffany, 1989 Topps and Topps Tiffany, 1988 Score, etc.
Goal 4: With PSA's expanding product line (e.g. grading of Hostess, etc.) work to get all remaining Mike Schmidt gradeable cards graded. After a long 2003 of expanding the size of the master set by nearly 200%, there should be relatively few areas for further expansion.
Goal 5: Find new Schmidt and 1955 Bowman collectors that I can inspire and help out whether through cards, trades, or simply just the exchange of information. My highlights from 2003 include relationships built with 1955 Bowman collectors (Davalillo, Ron Hobbs, Marshall, Howard Goodman, and a host of others) and Mike Schmidt collectors (James Kendall [who unfortunately divested his Schmidt set], Tim Orff, Scott Wetzel, Dave Lemon and others).

    Cheers-

    Updates:
Goal 1: Working on it - slowly. Including lots of throw-aways, and looking at a huge consignment to Mastro of some bulk.
Goal 2: I still need three or four. Making progress, but slowly.
Goal 3: Making some nice progress. Most notably, check out my Basic Set as soon as the Registry updates.
Goal 4: Requests in for over 60 additions to the Schmidt Registry
Goal 5: Meeting new Schmidt people is fun!
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Mike...the 55 bowman will be my next baseball set after I finish my 59 topps first...I have about 105 cards in the Near-Mint or better range so I still have a long way to go...hopefully, I'll finish soon. But I think I'll pick up a 55 bowman card here and there when the opportunity presents itself.

btw: I love all tv set card sets....55 bowman, 66 hockey and football.

Still working on upgrading my 71 topps hockey set in near-mint or better as well.

To finally be able to purchase a 1940 Play Ball Shoeless Joe Jackson in PSA 7. This is the last card I need to complete my set, and is the only card I've needed for about 6 months. - GOT IT!!

To get to 80% on the 1981 Topps BB. - Currently sitting at 77%.

To get to 75% on the 1989 UD set. - Submission at PSA. Should get me to around 60%.

Continue to upgrade, through personal submissions, my 1984 Fleer Update set. I would like to have this set complete in all PSA 10 from only personal submissions. I think that would be a pretty cool accomplishment. - Sadly sold this set off. Got to 9.53 GPA, and my set is now part of the new #1 set. Still have a straight PSA 9 set at 88%.

Pick up the occasional T205 PSA 4-5, and m116 PSA 5-7 just because I like them. - Have picked up many more T205's than m116's. No real goal here.

Continue to help Tipem find the Teenage Girls Sleepover Forum. - Still no luck.

Accidentally started a 1933 Tattoo Orbit set, and two vintage football sets. Yikes!

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.

    Here's my end-of-the year report:

Get Beckett to recognize and catalog some R423 cards and an Expos player cup I have that they have never listed.
    No luck.

Take at least 2 of my '50s registered sets over 10% complete.
Didn't make it on any of them - fell 3 short on one and 1 short on another.

Take my '72 Kellogg's All-Time Greats set over 50% complete.
    Fell 1 short.

Reach a total of at least 50 serial #ed Jerry Porter rookies (including serial #ed parallels).
Got it and more. Over 80 total.

Take at least one of my MVP gold script sets over 10% complete.
Got it on 2 of them.

Add at least 10 more new type cards to my collection.
Got it. Over 20 by my last count.

Add at least 5% to the completion percentage of at least 20 of my vintage sets.
I'm pretty sure I got it. Most of it came from '70s hockey or from small specialty sets.

Pull at least one certified autographed card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.
3 of them - all from one purchase of 13 basketball packs (Fleer GOTG BK - Abdul-Jabbar, Mikan, and Bob Knight).

Pull at least one game-used card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.
    No luck.

Acquire certified, authenticated, or in-person autographs of at least 10 Hall of Famers (any sport) that I don't already have.
Got it (8 baseball, 5 basketball, 3 football).

Acquire game-used cards of at least 10 Hall of Famers (any sport) that I don't already have.
    Nope. I think I added 1 or 2.

Reach 33 1/3% completion on my baseball HOF players registered set.
Got it with a few percent to spare.

Acquire at least 5 vintage autographed or memorabilia pieces.
Got it. 2 signed checks, 1 signed 8x10, 2 signed first day covers.

Take at least 10 other registered sets over 3% completion.
Got it with plenty to spare (about 20 sets over).

Acquire at least 1 more card of a HOFer in each of the following sets: T206, '33 Goudey, '34-'36 Diamond Stars, '40 Play Ball, '52 Topps, '54 Topps, '54 Bowman.
Nope. Got '33 Goudey (Manush), '40 Play Ball (Bender), and '54 Bowman (Lemon). That was it.

Acquire at least 1 PSA Topps card from every year before 1981 for which I don't already have at least 1.
Got it (using a Connie Mack All-Star for my '51).

Well, that was not too bad.

    How did everyone else do?

    Nick

    Dan,
I was just looking back at that thread on my goals three years ago. I have not really improved my 54 Wilson set and sold off the other two sets. Congrats on getting the Jablonski.

Congrats Dan- and you didn't have to hang out with Fancy Pearlsky to get it!
Wonder how everyone else did with there goals from 3 years ago, and where everyone has gone?

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Thanks Shane! I got the Fox in the Spring from Scott and was at 19 for a while. Nice to have the set complete.

I still have the Hack, Feller, and Schoendeinst that I got from you. I planned for it to take 3 years, and it took me close to 4 of continuous work, but definitely a fun ride.

What made you sell off the other 2 sets? Just got tired of them?

    edited to add:

Thanks Anthony! The White, and Sauer I got from you are the longest held cards in the set.

I remember this post image. I'm STILL filling holes in my 1962 Fleer PSA 8 and 1989 Score PSA 10 sets (need 1 more card from each). I did reach my goal of 8.50 on the NFL rushers set, but they added a couple cards so I have holes to fill again. I'm still dabbling in the yet-to-be-announced project, too image.

    << <i>

<< <i>To finish upgrading the remaining 7's in my 1969T BB set

Continue locating NM-MT+ raw commons to submit and add to my run of 1960's sets.

Purchase a high grade vintage set in an upcoming auction (Mastro?)

Locate a clean, untampered 1959T BB nickle wax pack to extend my run of packs back to the 50's. >>

    1) I now need only 2 upgrades to complete my 1969 set in 8 or better (McAndrew and Collins)

    2) Picked up a NM/MT 1970 set in the last Mastro auction. It was decent but not better than expected. Did get a NM-MT Bench AS from the set which came back in an 8 holder (high end 8 at that)

    3) Well, hopefully someone will break the stunning full box being sold in the upcoming Mastro auction. >>

    Well, this is always fun.

    1) I did wind up upgrading the last two 7's to 9's and have since added several more 9's to the set.
    2) I've picked up a few more sets through Mastro, mostly 1971's.
    3) Still in search of that elusive mint 1959 Nickel pack.
