It's November first...

So what are your goals for the 2004 collecting year? Who is planning to go hard for a new set? Who is planning to upgrade their winning sets? Who is planning to catch that pesky leader that always seems to stay 0.01 ahead?

Personally, I plan to upgrade my NFL Rushers set to about 8.50, keep filling holes in my 1962 Fleer PSA 8 and 1989 Score PSA 10 sets, and grab a few other upgrades here and there. I'm also dabbling with a yet-to-be-announced project.

Joe
No such details will spoil my plans...

I will be 50-60% complete in my 1967 Topps Baseball set.
      I will own a 1952 Topps Mantle PSA 5
and as my wife and I are planning on starting a family soon, God willing, I will be collecting for my new son.

I have a bunch of small, mini-goals for the 12 or so sets that I'm working on for 2004.

    Complete the 64 Giants in PSA 8/9 - 3 short - DONE!
    Complete the 70 Kellogg's in PSA 9 - 7 short - DONE!
Upgrade my 72 set from 8.94 GPA to at least 8.97 (getting tougher to upgrade lately) - BEAT IT!
Move my 70 set from 80% completion to 90% complete in PSA 8/9 - DONE!
Move my 71 set from 50% complete to 75% complete in PSA 8 - not happening - laid off
Move my 68 set from 58% complete to 75% complete in PSA 8/9- not happening - laid off
    Get my 67 and 64 sets 50% complete - 67 DONE - 64 not happening - laid off
Get my 72 OPC BB set over 8.00 GPA - - not there yet - submission at PSA

And I'm sure that there are a few others. If I do any or all of them - great... If I don't - they get rolled into 2005.

Goal 1: Reduce the size of my collection by 50 - 80% (Don't worry -- this is mainly vending cases and other stuff that just takes up space)
Goal 2: Find those last few pesky upgrades to my 1955 Bowman set. Persuade uber-collectors to trade their 8s for my 9s to make this happen, if no other avenues present themselves.
Goal 3: Find a few of those pesky modern Mike Schmidt cards in PSA 10 grade -- preferably through own submissions. Examples include 1988 Topps and Topps Tiffany, 1989 Topps and Topps Tiffany, 1988 Score, etc.
Goal 4: With PSA's expanding product line (e.g. grading of Hostess, etc.) work to get all remaining Mike Schmidt gradeable cards graded. After a long 2003 of expanding the size of the master set by nearly 200%, there should be relatively few areas for further expansion.
Goal 5: Find new Schmidt and 1955 Bowman collectors that I can inspire and help out whether through cards, trades, or simply just the exchange of information. My highlights from 2003 include relationships built with 1955 Bowman collectors (Davalillo, Ron Hobbs, Marshall, Howard Goodman, and a host of others) and Mike Schmidt collectors (James Kendall [who unfortunately divested his Schmidt set], Tim Orff, Scott Wetzel, Dave Lemon and others).

    Cheers-

Not much . . . fill in 1975 Topps commons in PSA 9 at reasonable prices when available and upgrade superstars to PSA 9 as well. As long as I am financially whole on the homefront, I will continue to buy as it is prudent to do so. I may start another set in the next year or two if a large lot or set that catches my interest is up for bid (and I win it, of course) as long as I have the money to get it.

Great Thread AlanAllen...it will be interesting to hear everyone's plans.

    Here are mine:

1.) Complete a certain early 70's Topps set (not a large mainstream one image) with a GPA of 9.0 or better. This would be the first set of that issue to reach that lofty goal. Right now Im at 71% complete with a 8.93 GPA.....I have yet to register this set.

2.) Start a Parkhurst Hockey set from the early 60's...the only problem is that they hardly come up for sale.

    For 2004 -

1 - Complete my graded 72T set - hopefully in a GPA of about 8.15 or better. I'd also prefer to complete it some time around March 1. That would make it just about 1 year start-to-finish. I'll continuously upgrade as reasonably-priced upgrades present themselves.
2 - Continue working on my graded 73 set. For 2004, I'd look to go from 17% to 75%. I don't expect to maintain a GPA of 8.57 which I have now, but I'd like to stay above 8.40 or so.
3 - Start work on a run of raw sets from 1978 to 1984 - all the Topps, Fleer, and Donruss sets from those years. The desired grade is "absolutely best example possible". This won't be done in 2004 - or even 2006.

So full of action, my name should be a verb.

My 2004 goal is to upgrade my 1972 Topps Football set so it reaches a 9.00 Set Rating.

I also plan to finish cleaning out my closet (For some reason I just can't throw away a box of POOR condition football commons that I have from the 70's & 80's)

Sometime this month I plan on sending in some 70's football cards to PSA (Got to take advantage of the Registry Special). I have 20 1978 Topps Football cards packaged a ready to go.

Maybe in a few years I will be able to try to put together a run of 1970-79 Graded Football Sets. But for now I will continue my quest for those 1972 upgrades.

    Carlos

  • My collecting goals for the next year are very modest. I'll be starting graduate school so I don't expect to have a lot of time or money to spend on cards. I will try to continue to pick up Don Mattingly graded cards, try to finish my 1979 Milton Bradley set, and try to find a few more psa 8 1969 Deckle Edge cards. I would love to make a submission to PSA but don't think I will be able to this year.
  • 1. I want my master set at 75% and 1983 and 1984 all in psa 10.

2 Basic set I want finished and most of the cards in 9 and higher. And I want 10 more PSA 10's (1983 Tops Rookie a must)

To help I have started buying boxes of unopened cards. And more bulk lots.

done I'd like to build a nice shelving unit to display it.

especially the Walter Johnson "hands at chest" card.

    3. Acquire these cards from my wantlist: 1952 Bowman Stan Musial PSA 7,

  • Nice post.
Interesting to hear about everyone's plans.

    I plan to:

Take my 69' Baseball Set from 90 to 95% complete.

Take my 66' Baseball Set from 25% to 40%.

I have clamored to build a collection defining 50's set for some time. Initially I set out to build a low to mid grade 52' Topps Baseball set but the auction competition is fierce due to the popularity of this set.
I have recently settled on the next passion. I have begun a 1954 Topps Baseball set in PSA 7 grade. Initially I will work on mostly the commons and minor stars. I will take a very cautious and deliberate approach so as to not divert to many funds away from the goals of my other projects.
To me, the 54's display what a "baseball card", should be.

I hope to get this set to around 10% (maybe 15%) by next November.
If anyone has any dupe 7's they would want to reasonably part with please contact me.

    My intentions are fairly simple...

Complete all sets that I am currently working on. My Top 3 Priorities:

#1- NFL HOF RC set, currently at 88.82%.
    #2- All-Time Great QBs, currently at 88.89%.
#3- 1980's Football Team of the Decade, currently at 91.67%.

Also want to continue upgrading whenever possible. Also thinking about starting a 1957 Topps FB set. Depends on how much I spend or don't spend to complete my current sets...

Best of luck to everyone in the coming year. I am VERY happy with my "Rookie" year on the Registry. I discovered the Registry back in January and will end up with 10 "Best of the Registry" certificates this year!!! They will look great along side my collection display..

  • Set-wise, my goals look like this, in no particular order:
    • Finish my 1950 Callahan HOF 8/9 set and research. I'd also like to get scans of all the cards online and perhaps even write an article about the set. I think that I have finally identified the diagnostics of the white cap/dark cap variation of the Gehringer card, and have a dark cap example for grading (none have been graded yet). Including that card, I am only 13 shy of being completed.
    • Make the 50% mark on my 1960 Leaf 8/9 set (currently at 20%)
    • Finish my 1963 Fleer 8 set. No plans to take any of these cards to 9s.
    • Start a 1961 Nu-Card Scoops 9/10 set. (I am already at the 10% mark, though I have yet to register the set).

Take my '72 Kellogg's All-Time Greats set over 50% complete. (1 down, 3 to go).
Reach a total of at least 50 serial #ed Jerry Porter rookies (including serial #ed parallels) [13 down, 23 to go].
Take at least one of my MVP gold script sets over 10% complete.
Add at least 10 more new type cards to my collection [3 down, 7 to go].

Pull at least one certified autographed card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.
Pull at least one game-used card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.

Reach 33 1/3% completion on my baseball HOF players registered set (4 down, 28 to go).
Acquire at least 5 vintage autographed or memorabilia pieces.
Take at least 10 other registered sets over 3% completion. [progress on some of them].
Acquire at least 1 more card of a HOFer in each of the following sets: T206, '33 Goudey, '34-'36 Diamond Stars, '40 Play Ball, '52 Topps, '54 Topps, '54 Bowman [1 down, 6 to go].

    Here's my progress so far.

Get Beckett to recognize and catalog some R423 cards and an Expos player cup I have that they have never listed.
    No luck so far.

Take at least 2 of my '50s registered sets over 10% complete.
5 to go on each of 2 sets, but one of those has 4 on the way.

Take my '72 Kellogg's All-Time Greats set over 50% complete.
    1 to go.

Reach a total of at least 50 serial #ed Jerry Porter rookies (including serial #ed parallels).
Got it already. 45 #ed rookies, 8 #ed rookie parallels, with several on the way.

Take at least one of my MVP gold script sets over 10% complete.
Got it. 12% in hand on 2000 MVP football, with a few more on the way.

Add at least 10 more new type cards to my collection.
Got it. 20 by my last count (E121 Series of 80 American Caramel, 1960 Lake to Lake Braves, 1965 Kahn's, 1965 Old London coins, 1960 Bell Brand Dodgers, 1961 Lake to Lake Packers, R312 Pastel Premiums, 1973 OPC team checklists, 1973 Topps Candy Lids, 1951 Topps Current All-Stars, W516-1, 1955 Golden Press stamps, 1953 Johnston Cookies, 1947 & 1948 Smith's Clothing, 1949 Remar Bread, 1964 Topps Venezuelan, 1911 Sporting Life, N28 Allen & Ginter, 1952 Wheaties), plus 2nd cards on a few sets that I previously had only one card from (C46, 1968 Atlantic Oil, 1971 Topps Greatest Moments, 1960 Morrell Meats, 1936 Goudey).

Add at least 5% to the completion percentage of at least 20 of my vintage sets.
I've been slacking here, although Kellogg's and discs may save me eventually.

Pull at least one certified autographed card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.
    No luck so far.

Pull at least one game-used card of a Hall of Famer (any sport) from a pack.
    No luck so far.

Acquire certified, authenticated, or in-person autographs of at least 10 Hall of Famers (any sport) that I don't already have.
    8 down (7 baseball, 1 basketball), 2 to go.

Acquire game-used cards of at least 10 Hall of Famers (any sport) that I don't already have.
None so far (unless you count already having a card and the player just making the HOF now).

Reach 33 1/3% completion on my baseball HOF players registered set.
19 down, 14 to go (with a few on the way).

Acquire at least 5 vintage autographed or memorabilia pieces.
    2 signed checks.

Take at least 10 other registered sets over 3% completion.
About 17 or 18 brought past that mark, mainly thanks to regionals, Kellogg's, and discs. Special thanks to King Kellogg and Galveston for great deals that gave me a start on several of these sets.

Acquire at least 1 more card of a HOFer in each of the following sets: T206, '33 Goudey, '34-'36 Diamond Stars, '40 Play Ball, '52 Topps, '54 Topps, '54 Bowman.
Got '33 Goudey out of the way (Manush).

Acquire at least 1 PSA Topps card from every year before 1981 for which I don't already have at least 1.
8 down, 3 to go ('55, '60, and '66, although I probably should get a '51 Red or Blue Back as well).

Yeah, I know. Set your goals low enough and they become easy to achieve. image

  • Frank,

Interesting that you bring this one back. With your help and that of some of my 69' comrades I have already achieved 95% which I originally posted on my first response. I now think it is within reason that with continued support I might complete my beloved 69' baseball set this year.

My 66' set has been sold and is now part of the very nice Cryer Set. I have also bailed on the 54' set to pursue 55'T Baseball which is around 13% complete.

I am dabbling in some mid to late 70's issues and may decide to pursue those seriously.

Lastly, I have an affection for the T218 Champions set from 1910. I have a line on some nice cards that Im am pursuing this week and may start submitting these for grading. Mostly Boxers and Track & Field athletes they look a lot like the 1933 Goudey Baseball.

Aside from that, nothing much is going on :-)

I am close to my goal of 50-60% on the 1967. I am at 45ish right now. As far as the Mantle, I may miss that one. Still plenty o'time.

<< <i>To finish upgrading the remaining 7's in my 1969T BB set

Continue locating NM-MT+ raw commons to submit and add to my run of 1960's sets.

Purchase a high grade vintage set in an upcoming auction (Mastro?)

Locate a clean, untampered 1959T BB nickle wax pack to extend my run of packs back to the 50's. >>

    1) I now need only 2 upgrades to complete my 1969 set in 8 or better (McAndrew and Collins)

    2) Picked up a NM/MT 1970 set in the last Mastro auction. It was decent but not better than expected. Did get a NM-MT Bench AS from the set which came back in an 8 holder (high end 8 at that)

    3) Well, hopefully someone will break the stunning full box being sold in the upcoming Mastro auction.

    My original post:

<< <i>1.) Complete a certain early 70's Topps set (not a large mainstream one ) with a GPA of 9.0 or better. This would be the first set of that issue to reach that lofty goal. Right now Im at 71% complete with a 8.93 GPA.....I have yet to register this set.

2.) Start a Parkhurst Hockey set from the early 60's...the only problem is that they hardly come up for sale. >>

1.) Well I broke up the 1970 Topps Super set and helped Bob Earhart upgrade his set.

2.) Instead of Parkhurst hockey....Im currently building 4 Topps Hockey sets from 1960-63. I am furthest along in the 1962 Hockey set at 84% in PSA 8.
