Anybody here ever use the David Lawrence "Make Offer" feature?

I just did and all I have to say is WOWSA! I made a stupid offer on a coin, (33% less than they were asking), thinking for sure I'd get a counter. Instead, I got an acceptance in two minutes flat! Damn! image

Not to rain on your parade or anything but maybe you still offered too much? When someone immediately says "yes" to my offer I'm always thinking that maybe I should have gone lower. image

I offered what the coin is worth to me, so it would not be possible that I offered too much.

If you keep buying coins from him and keep progressively lowering the percentage of what he's asking let us know when the counter offer comes in. This way you can save all the other members some cash.
    Please let us know. Thanks!!!

    What did you buy?

    Clank,

No, but I wish it was. They are one of the sites I check several times a week looking for an 1866. They had an NGC MS63BN recently, but it was a dog.

It was a 1964-D Kennedy in MS66. Major blazer. Just the way I like them. image They had it at $55, with a 5% discount to $52 and change. I offered $35. That's actually slightly above market, but most of the MS66's I've seen are major bowsers.

I haven't had an opportunity to use that feature with them, but I've done a lot of business with DLRC over the last couple of months. I've been very happy with the transactions.
  • I just got an inexpensive Carver in from them yesterday. Good coin, good service.

It's a good thing too. Some guy on eBay is placing moon bids on every decent Carver that comes down the pike.

It is a strange and disturbing phenomenon.

  • I like DL...haven't tried the "make an offer"...and their prices are pretty strong....but I've gotten nothing but top quality and great customer service from them.
  • Russ- Thanks for the positive feedback! 99% of the time, I am the one who reviews the offers that come through and it's usually an inner struggle with whether to accept or counter-offer. On a $52 coin it doesn't make much sense to go back and forth, so I accept an offer that is reasonably close to our cost.

Many times, people will order other coins at the same time which helps absorbs a loss. Either way, we'd like to see the older coins find new homes, so please feel free to make offers. That said, please don't think that I routinely accept offers at 60% of our list price. This was a bit of an exception, and I'm glad Russ was able to benefit.

Thank you all for your support.

    Sincerely,

  • Uh Oh...DL is reading our comments. Remember I said nice things about you image
  • I agree with Russ. I've made some "stupid" offers and they've taken them. And yes, they were offers for what I thought was a good price. Maybe I did well, maybe I didn't, but I felt good about it. They will also counter-offer if you go very low on a good coin.

FYI-you can also bargain with them on the stuff that's not up for "make an offer".

And surely they are reading this so the gravy train will end! image

  • I've purchased a few coins from them, both with the Make an Offer button and without. The offers I've made have all been on the low side (we're talking offers on $25-$100 coins, here), but they've always been taken. I've always been very happy with DLRC.

  • I'll give you 66% of what you just paid!

  • DL does a really nice job, I have purchased both coins and books from them. Always received excellent service
and now they even ship free. Class operation.
  • I've used the "make an offer" and was very successful. I got the coin at the price I wanted to pay. Needless to say, thus far, David Lawrence has been a sole source for a great majority of my coins!

    Russ:

I have read your post and it looks as if you are pleased... its a Kennedy and you know Kennedy halfs as well as just about anyone so congrats! Its good to know that reasonable offers are accepted. Offhand, I know that I have seen the folks at David Lawrence at shows and they have been pleasant and professional.

I dealt with a Jack Robinson there and had a horrible experience. I will never use David Lawrence again.
