Is $100 too much to bid on this 1852 $1 gold coin? (sorry about the size proportion)

I'm no expert, but unless I'm missing something, it doesn't seem too much at all.

    Assuming it's real, of course.

Unless it is counterfeit, the coin looks like a MS-63 to me. No, $100 would be a very nice price.

  • Be careful about buying these raw. There's a lot of counterfeits around. I've seen a lot of 1853 dated ones that were bad.

Bugs - nothing against the seller, as I don't know who he or she is.

But, unless it's someone with an impeccable reputation, I would be concerned about the coin's authenticity and would recommend that you NOT take the risk.
  • Dang it....I already have, and....

    This is who it is!

What do you think....my maximum bid is $100.

You'll probably be outbid at $100.

  • That's what I'm hoping....that I'll be outbid! I bid on a foolish whim!

  • Ah, bidder's remorse! I'd like to have it for that price, but agree that caveat emptor for the series in raw
specimens of this type is prudent.

I see the seller is liquidating a friend's collection. As such, if not authentic, is the sellor exempt from
culpability as providing 'only a venue'?

    I didn't see a return policy stated...

If genuine, that coin would be a real great buy, but I dont think it is!

it seems this is a beautiful example, but im concerned with the seemingly raised areas on the obv ...almost like its a cast copy...date seems well struck even though most in that era (1852-53) the date is usally weak...

  • The current bid is at $73.00. Is there anyway to reduce my maximum bid to the current bid?

    Thanks all for replying,

I myself, wouldn't worry one bit. Someone will outbid you...

Yep, I agree you will get outbid!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I agree with the Poindexter guy - gotta be real careful when buying raw gold - much less from Ebay!

looks nice, but not my area.....i was concerned with the obverse raised area as well.

I don't like this coin... there is a reasonable probability that this coin is not authentic. I really wish that I could be more optimistic.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • Is the seller trustworthy (good feedback)? Is he/she willing to give a money back guarantee? These are questions that you should be asking the seller prior to bidding.

I am speaking from experience. I've been screwed because I wasn't knowledgable enough on Gold Coinage and by the time I had received the coin in a body bag stating "Authenticity Questionable" the seller was nowhere to be found.

If this coin is genuine, then the $100.00 is a great price.

You can always retract your bid, since there is still 3+ days left

Having bought them myself, I can attest that there is plenty of raw gold on eBay that is cleaned/whizzed/counterfiet.

I count anything outside PCGS,NGC or ANACS as raw.

I have bought quite a few counterfiet $1 gold pieces on ebay in the last few years. I won't even look at raw $1 gold anymore on ebay. I think half the raw coins are counterfiet- maybe more. mike image
  • I certainly appreciate all the responses I've gotten to this thread. I think it goes to show that if you are very specific in your title, you will get a good response by those who are experienced with your particular situation. I use to use a short title, thinking it would arouse curiosity, and it would only get half as many replies. I have also gotten several PM's....for which I'm also very appreciative. image

BTW....the current bid is up to $93.00+, so it does look as if it is going to go over $100....whew!

    Thanks again everyone....you're great! image

It just doesn't look right to me. I think it's fake.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • Bugs, I don't think you will have to worry about being outbid. But if you aren't and it does turn out to be fake (Which personally I think it is, don't ask why because I realy can't explain it more that it just looks odd and seems to ave some raised spikes in the fields that concern me.) it is attractive enough that I would take it off your hands for $125. That's more than a counterfeit is worth but this is appears to be a very nice one.
  • If you're worried that it might be a conterfeit, then I see from the auction page that they accept (and prefer) PayPal. I'd use that and opt for the Buyer Protection stuff, and if it is a fake, you "should" be covered.

fake -> color, denticles, hair details

$100 is kinda pricey for a counterfeit with somewhere $30 of gold bullion value

Even if you get this coin, will cost you another $15-35 to send to ANACS/PCGS to find out a fake and with all of mailing and slow turnaround, will be hard to collect on 30 day return

if you win, sell to KEETS or try to talk the guy into you paying to send to grading company and if real, buy the coin - if fake, refund grading fees

The coin looks real to me. The blob in front of the nose is normal for this date, and the sharpness and surfaces appear to be OK. But the color looks to be too light in the photo to be original. I'd say that this piece has been dipped, which is why it's not in a slab.

Given the sharpness this coin could bring from $175 to $250. If a couple of people think it will get into a slab as an MS-63, it could bring a lot more. If it does, the buyer might be disappointed. image
