Forget the Afro-Sheen-- check out my Indo-Chine!

image

Here's my denomination set for French Indo China. I know that I am missing some, but I don't care. You see, I got an Air Tite cherrywood case at Long Beach last year and decided to use it for an FIC denomination set. There are only 7 spaces, so I only need 7 coins. Since there are two holes for crown-size coins I'll need the piastre du commerce and the 1931 piastre (I'm still looking for the latter).

The piastre really has luster underneath the brownish hazy toning (no, really!), but it looks dull in this scan.

I've got a 1920P one centime AU similar to your 1897 piece-when these tone it's very hard to see any detail whatsoever, even in AU; were these coins weakly struck or is it the design? By the way, nice coins shiro!
Watch out for those piastre's de commerce- there are a lot of counterfeits and even if legitimate, any wear at all on the coins gives the seated liberty (?) a flat face.

I saw a 1931 piastre overstruck on a piastre de commerce last week and didn't bid nearly enough for it. Alas-- it's in someone else's collection now. image

I got the one I needed for my set so I won't be buying any more (unless I find a REALLY nice one that isn't too expensive). I know what you mean by the wear patterns-- liberte's nose gets worn first, so only light circulation makes her look like Jimmy Durante! image

    Fantastic, Shiroh.

I do have one question. Now that you have filled the holes in your case, how will you fill the holes in your coins?

Shiro-I was looking at my Krause last night, specifically French Indo China, and dispairing of finding a 20 C or 50C in nice condition(19th cent.) that I could afford-it'll be a while for me, even at 2003 Krause prices. Excellent ensemble!image

    Thanks Askari!

French and French colonial of the past 100 years or so sport some of my favorite designs.

I started collecting an Indo-China type set about 8 years ago, mostly passively, picking up a nice piece here and there. Some of the denominations sure are hard to come by in nice original condition, at least around my area.

I finally found a 1931 piastre for my type set at Long Beach on Saturday:

The new scanner I have is as bad as the old one, and I don't have editing software to make up for the bad scan. It's a decent EF coin with luster.

Very Cool! I missed this thread the first time or two around...excellent set idea. I like those 20th century French dependency (is that a good name for them????) coins. Some of them are fun and cheap, with good designs. Some of them are less than cheap though image.

    Fantastic.

I have some 1940s F.I.C. coins that I just plucked from a bulk bag (several 1941 20-cents, for example), but I suspect you already have those.

Really love that 1938 5c design.
