JamminJ's Second Coin Party

JamminJJamminJ Posts: 1,413 ✭✭✭
Hello everyone,

For the second time this year a bunch of forum members gathered at my home to BBQ and talk coins. I won’t attempt to name the attendees as I’ll invariably leave someone out, with the exception of the dear, departed gmarguli who can’t post here (at least with that ID).

There were lots of really good coins as well as some truly spectacular examples and a few for comic relief purposes. Two forum members covers the grades on their slabs for a little “grading challenge.” I'll let the pictures tell the story:

Plenty of this going on:

No one left hungy:

Much to my wife's glee several wives and girlfriend also came. She doesn't mind being a coin widow, but doesnt want to be the only coin widow!
image

There we're spottings of both darksiders (Shiro wore his platform shoes)...
image

...and an Open Forum fixture...

And finally me with one of our dearly departed members:

I invite any attendees to add their comments here. If you would like a copy of the pictures shoot me a PM and I'll e-mail you the photos or mail a CD.

I made it home fine and woke up to find a red sun and my neighborhood covered in ashes. It's pretty bad around here, but I'm not near any of it thank God. My sister is and I'm concerned.

The coin grading challenge was fun and everybody did well at it. TJKillian and Jom have some impressive coins. TJ has a real good variety. While grading them, or attempting to, I found myself awestruck when I found just what some of them were. Jom has some AU58s that rival or exceed many uncirculated examples, which seems like a good way to collect.

Many thanks to JamminJ for inviting me. It was fun and a pleasure to meet everybody there.

Always happy to have you and glad to hear you enjoyed it!

    << <i>My sister is and I'm concerned. >>

This is the biggest one I've lived by, quite frightening. I hope your sister comes through OK.

I also enjoyed the grading challenge and did better than I thought I would - although prior knowledge of Jom's awesome AU-58s helped. Now if I could only find get better at spotting cleaned coins I'd be OK!

  • I'm not that familiar with the Members. Could you edit and tell who is in the Pictures?? image
And Claw, What do you collect?? image
  • clw54clw54 Posts: 3,815 ✭✭✭
I'm second from the bottom. MrLee is on the left, I'm on the right.

I have a complete Lincoln cent collection and a complete Mercury dime collection. Other than that, I just buy whatever strikes me as being cool.
  • I know your pic Claw. Mr Lee looks a bit different. I save Lincolns myself!! image

Greg you can't hide behind that Pumpkin.

    I know that profile anywhere.

Wish I could have made it.
    It looks great.

The guy in the green shirt is Woodwind.

  • << <i>7. Shironiichan, Mrs. Shiro >>

Man - you guys were right - Shiro's REALLY short! image

That's why I seldom see Shiroh at coin shows. He's hard to locate.

Thanks Claw, I was embarrased by that one.

By the way, not only can Greg hide behind Halloween stuff but food products as well!

I should also add thanks to MrLee, he did all the organization - I just supplied the house!

James, thanks once again for hosting the party. I had a tremendous time. The coins that everyone brought were some of the finest I've seen. Dale (ToningInTheBlood) brought his set of toned Morgans. Everyone of them with outstanding toning. Bud , who is not a member here but one we know from local shows, brought his Proof sets (1950 to 1956). These were first rate sets. FBL Franklins, Fullstep Jeffersons and wonderful toning
Here's a shot of Nucklehead looking though Dale's toned Morgans (with Dale keeping a close eye on him)

And here's another couple of pictures of the on-going "Grading Challenge"
    image
This is one of Braddick and Woodwind testing their skills.
    image
And here is jom and tjkillian trying their hand at it with CLW54 supervising the process.
    image

And a real big thanks to Greg for providing the Steaks

And to clarify the people in James pictures:
#1 Elcontador (Jeff), jom, braddick and gmarguli
#2 James, Woodwind (Allen) and Tonigintheblood (Dale)
    #3 Braddick and Woodwind
    #6 Woodwind and his girlfriend

Here's my favorite. Nuckelhead doing what he does best.

I'd like to thank all the members who attended. You're a great bunch of people and I hope we can do it again real soon.

Well, I was not in charge of photography! You are in this one, if a little tough to see:

Glad to hear you had fun! You should hope the next one come soon, as we will likely be serving the Heinikens you left this time.

How's the statistical analysis of your grading test coming?

We didn't forget you. Here's one just for you Tom.

  • Yep, that's me in the third picture from the top worshipping a proof Seated Dollar.

My girlfriend Liza and I wanted to thank JamminJ and MrLee again for inviting us to the party, and for the great food. We both had a great time. Liza enjoyed meeting the other coin widows, and I had a great time meeting some new fellow collectors. We probably would have stayed longer had we not agreed to meet with a new car dealer that afternoon. (BTW, I'm the happy owner of a new 2004 Nissan Sentra.) image

Thanks also to all for sharing their knowledge, and for the feedback on the 1877-CC Dime I brought. The guess the grade was fun too even though I realized I probably shouldn't apply to PCGS as a grader any time soon. image

  • While many of our neighboring towns were burning, all who attended enjoyed the friendly confines of James and his lovely wife. The group enjoyed the fine food, drinks, and desserts. By the way, one of the desserts had enough liquor in it, that Braddick was giving breathalizor tests before we walked out the door for the drive home. I think he was afraid we would self-ignite if one of the hot embers landed on us. The coin viewing, coin grading, and coin stories heard around the room kept the crowd excited, and the wives all sat together and tolerated the men and their toys. Thanks again for an enjoyable afternoon.

Do you know how many neat coins you could have gotten in lieu of a Nissan?image

Mrs. JamminJ thinks the tiramisu was overly rummy ias while the recipe was followed meticulously, she used 151 proof rum instead of the normal 80 proof stuff. Ah, the trouble that not drinking brings you!

    -JamminJ
  • I should have made this... I'm kicking myself! 151?

I felt the rum a little. That dessert was potent.

Oh yeah. I could have bought a proof Seated Dollar, like the one I saw there.

I too wished I could have made it, but I had to go to NoCal for business on Friday and ended up getting stuck there.

Maybe if my house is still here (see my other post) I can host one of these parties in the future up in LA!

Either way, count me in on the next one!

  • I am sorry I missed it too (I told Dale I was going for sure) but I posted a bunch of new coins on my website Friday and got hammered all day Saturday with inquiries and orders so I had to tend to bizz. It sure looks like everybody had a really great time and I hope I get an invitation to the next one -- I'll definitely make it.
