***Does anyone really buy coins from this moron?***

We have all talked about this guy but look at the photo below. Do people really think the coins look like this or is the seller just a moron. I apologize for my negativity but this guy really gets under my skin. It is bondman22 from Ebay incase you don't recognize his highly modified computer pictures.

I purchased a couple of times from him. After the third return I gave up. This guy DEFINATELY enhances his pictures!

    Cheers,

Here is my best photoshop reconstruction guess of the coin with color and tone correction.

good skills but I bet it won't even look like your picture
  • I've purchased once from this fellow and aware of his photo enhancement; however, the purchase that I made must've been 1:1, 000,000 for it is neat. He only showed the obverse of the coin at the auction. Nothing spectacular! It's the reverse that's COOL... it's chromatic cobalt blue....image
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?
  • I dont. But then I dont buy from greattoning, mbcoin, or any of the big sellers on EBAY. Its just a simple question of how much you want to pay for the material. I dont like paying those super high prices when I can get a comparable coin much cheaper from an obscure seller or in a totally different venue. BTW, I dont think any of those large pictures shown by any seller on ebay are natural, nor do they show what the coin will really look like. It is still a crapshoot. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Of all them, I like the pictures from TBT and from JB Steven the best. You can see the luster and I consider that important. The pictures they show are much closer to what the coin will actually look like, IMHO.

With so many collectors demanding coins with toning, it's no surprise the Ebay sellers are doing this. And is Ebay is what I would call "wild west city," it seems that just about anything goes. At the least the coin is certified and genuine, which more that you can say for some of the stuff on Ebay.

Like the guy who was selling counterfiet 19th century presidential campaign medalets emailed me when I informed him that the piece he was offering was NO GOOD, "We have a liberal return policy." image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Does that return policy mean that we can return Gray Davis to them? Al Gore? Howard Dean?

  • Wow - this seller is bad! How about these two pics from the same auction; The reverse insert is white, and the obverse insert is purple. Man, that is really bad!

Edit - sorry, I do not know how to put the pic in the post yet. image
    SNIKT!

Ah, yes, the Bondman, the E-bay dealer that forum members love to hate. Mr. Berman, who really is a bond man, is quite good at taking your typical brown toned dollar and making it look mostly like the secondary color on the coin, no matter how little of that color actually exists. The fact is, the brown blue combination is very easy to manipulate in such a way as to make it resemble primarily blue when the exact opposite is true.

The Bondman's coins are rarely top quality toned pieces. But, some are actually nice, although it's very difficult to tell from the scans which ones those are. What I can tell you with some confidence is that the Bondman acquires quite a lot of his coins from one particular toned dollar dealer who regularly attends regional and national shows, and to the best of my knowledge is not member of this forum. Thus, those of you who are enticed by the Bondman's offerings can eliminate the middleman completely and buy exactly the same coins as the Bondman from the original wholeseller. I really prefer not to mention this wholesale dealer's name because I don't want to link him to the Bondman when he almost surely has no direct connection to him, when I do some business with him, and because I happen to like him.
  • You would think he would be smart enough to just show a closeup of the coin and not the entire slab with the label. The coin still wouldn't look natural, but it wouldn't be sooo blatantly obvious.

  • Yes, I was the fool who bought one of his coins and was amased at how different it looked when I opened the surprize package. We exchanged - feedback and went are seperate ways. I would advise anyone to just "say no."

i actually put a premium on seeing the coin holdered in any auction. it's sort of like the early days of color television when we really had to mess with the color balance and tint. the rule of thumb was to get the skin color correct and everthing else should be OK. that's how i go about judging some of these toned coins-----if the insert looks correct, the rest of the color should be at least close with no manipulation. in the case of this coin, Run, Forrest!!!!!! Ruuuuuuun!!

Does anyone really buy coins from this moron?

I've purchased quite a number of coins from the Bond Man over the course of the last 15 years. No problems in the least. Of course I looked at them in person first. Maybe the question should be "Are there any morons out there who actually buy coins based on obviously bad scans?" An even better question is "Are they getting what they deserve?"

Uh, oh. Better run quick Andy! image

everyone is new at one time but why does he always tweak his photos the way he does? Does he not realize they look bad?

What kind of person would hire someone like that? image

Color me tainted also. I bought a supposedly wicked looking 83cc from him in 65 just a few weeks back. The brightly colored yellow insert (should have been light green) was the tip off. Coin looked amazingly clean to boot.

The coin was very average with attractive color but certainly not worth the premium I paid. I returned it and am awaiting a refund.
Hopefully, that's not a long wait! Relatively chattered up for a 65 and none of that was visible in the scan. My first and likely last sight unseen interaction.

What do they say about the Bond Girls? Well I'm now a Bond man!
