Possibly FS: 1883 No Cents Gold Plated Nickel

I'm just curious as to what offers I could get for such. Is there anyway to tell for sure if the gold plating is or is not "authentic", i.e. plated in 1883 for racketeering purposes? The coin is in ch vf condition and the gold has worn off on the high points of the coin.

sounds, judging by your description, that it probably is an old racketeer nickel.

depending on grade I think that they go for 10-15.00.

Thanks for the help goose (about the coin and the spelling of racketeer!) I think my dad gave it to me as a kid, and he bought it from a store for a few dollars, so I probably wont sell it unless I got a substantial offer. I would think that if they could be authenticated for sure, they would be worth a lot more.
  • I just sold this one last week at a coin show for $17.00

  • Real rackateer nickels usually had reeding added to the edge to make it look more like a gold coin. Many people gold plate the coins to add the story and a few $'s to the sale.
