Would you crack out an ANA to submit to PCGS?

I have an 1879-S Morgan in an ANA slab graded MS 64 PL. I am wondering if it would be worth it to crack it out and send it in to PCGS and risk getting a lower grade. What do you all think?

Do you believe the grade is accurate? If so, do it. If not, don't. I've only cracked a handfull of ANACS slabs but, so far and knock on wood, they've come back from PCGS at at least the grade ANACS had assigned. But, it's like any other grading service; some will be there, some won't.

Do you really think anyone cares about a Morgan dollar registry set in MS64? Step back and think about it. If you crack this coin out you are just wasting your hard earned money.

There's only one person who needs to care about it. I happen to love my MS64 Walker Short Set.

  • ANA slabs when the ANA owned the service aren't really scarce and you can still find them in junk boxes.

ANA slab is same as ANACS?

Every company has its strengths and weaknesses so depends on the type I would think.
Didnt the mercury dime people here comment here a while back about how conservative ANACS was with them and the FB designation?

Also on my own just comparing population data, ANACS pops are so low for high grade buffaloes. Do you think they are conservative on them as well or just few submittals compared to P&N?image

If you want a PCGS 64PL just spend $100 and buy one. By the time you resubmit it and it doesn't come back the grade you want and THEN you buy one you done wasted your hard earned $$.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • yeah but what if he submits it and it comes back a 65pl or even a 66pl ?

Crack it out and don't resubmit if you like the coin for yourself. If you want the plastic for protection,or want to sell, I'd leave it as it is unless a shot 65. K
  • if you like the coin and do not see upgrading the coin regardless of the grade (Registry Points Junkies please don't stone me) on the plastic send it in and get it PCGS'ed ~ if you aren't in it for the crackout game ie: money, why not?

See... this is why I don't like the registry set idea- you are going for the plastic, not the coin. If you like the coin, keep it as it is.

Here's my article on the Registry Sets that was in Numismatist in August... I think it explains my position as well as it need to be. Thanks to Russ for scanning it... The Plastic War

No... if you are going to do the PCGS Morgan Registry, consider buying raw coins and submitting them to PCGS. Buying ANACS or NGC for the PCG Registry does not make much sense for the common dates because it just is not worth the money to have them regraded. It may be a different story with the key dates...

If your 1879-s is not the reverse of 1878, then just buy another that you like. It is not a rare date and it is easily available in the PL 64 Range. Good luck in your efforts.

I do. I worked long and F***ING hard to comprise a set, even if it is a mere 64 grade(s). As far as the set registry is concerned, it's purely the fun part of the composition....image

You go for it COS...It's a start!...
