1909 vdb matte proof

You go to an auction. You buy a bag of "old coins" for $200. You open it and find among other coins an 1804 half cent Fine+ - 1845 & 1854 large cent MS and 2 red plastic capital type holders that are etched in gold lettering saying 1909 vdb matte proof!. The coins inside are indeed 1909 vdb but how do I tell if they are matte proof? I have a picture of one of them but I have no way of posting it. Thanks

  • I know the odds of having even 1 is like 1 in a billion but hey, I have TWO!!!! So thats what, 2 in a billion. COOL!

  • Looks like a start, the rims and letters of "ONE CENT" appear squared. Otherwise, tough to tell from the photos.

tlhoy, here are the three key diagnostics that would support your coin being a true 1909VDB Matte Proof Lincoln Cent. This is in addition to the normal expectations of a proof coin like squared off rims, etc.

    1. Die polish lines show on front of and on top of Lincoln's nose.
    2. A die scratch from the back of Lincoln's coat going into the field below the right leg of the R of LIBERTY.
    3. Die chip to the right of M in UNUM on reverse.

There are pictures of these diagnostics in the ANA Counterfeit Detection book issued in 1988. The analysis is by Leonard Albrecht of the ANA which was done in 1983. To the best of my knowledge, PCGS and other top tier grading services will check for these diagnostics on this coin before certifying. They are not easy to see unless you have a good loope at at least 10x with good lighting. Since the coin is a Matte proof, not a brilliant proof, it is easy to mistake it as a circulation version. Good luck with this. Steveimage

Tlhoy, it's nearly impossible to tell from images, but, at least I'm not able to say "no way", which is good.

If you are (justifiably) confident that you can remove the coin from its holder without getting fingerprints on it, damaging it, etc., take a look at the edges - if they are shiny / brilliant , that would be one point in favor of its possible Proof status.

Okay, I have very carefully analyzed the image and have viewed it on a variety of monitors at various resolutions and I can say with absolute certainty that - I have no idea, but it sure would be cool if it was! image

I believe the OP was, regrettably, banned at some point a year or two ago.....he wouldn't be able to comment here. He is a sometimes poster on the Open Forum Refuge so maybe someone there, that reads here as well, can ask him and find out. Would be cool if it was.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

The OP had this to say this morning:

Holy cow. That was like one of my first posts on the CU forum.

Sadly, they are both business strikes. Here is a better photo I took of the one cosmicdebris posted for me back then.
    Damn I miss that forum

I don't think you can identify a MPL by an average pic. Here's one that has the look but absolutely none of the die markers for a MPL:

    I remember this thread!

Glenn was banned? Wow, I always thought of him as one of the good guys.

I'm sorry to hear that he was banned. image

As for the coin, the weakness in the inside rims on reverse precludes it from being a 1909-VDB Matte Proof IMO.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I really like the look of the coin posted by drwstr123. Albrecht's article is now 25 years old. Isn't it at least possible that there was more than one variety of 1909-VDB; especially if you don't buy into the sometimes quoted mintage of 420 pieces?

gosh i tried n tried to find the thread where someone had bought one at a swapmeet in a dealers bargin box for like $15.

in a thread here he asked if it was a matte and updated the thread that it graded pr65....anyone here remember that or can find it???

During the 2003 posting I had some PM correspondence with Glen. He indicated he would send the coin to ANACS. Per the note above, I guess it didn't make it. Sorry. Steveimage
