I also find it interesting that so many posters point the finger at external factors or the politicians. This is nonsense. Jobs being lost to other nations is an indication we are overpaid and no longer competitive. This has been gone on for decades, first automotives, then manufacturing and now even some service jobs. I was just in Nagoya Japan and saw literally hundreds sleeping on cardboard boxes in city parks. They are the homeless. Their manufacturing jobs have been lost to Korea, China and Indonesia. As one's economic standard increases it is more difficult to sustain it especially if the base can be exported offshore.

This is exactly the mentality Im talking about, everyone is considered overpaid except the CEO! I noticed how you point out the automotive sector as being #1, a mostly union industry. Some people say if every job were union, think how expensive things would be. I say, "No, just take some of the money from the people who are really overpaid(CEOs) and use it to pay a living wage to the real workers! Prices wouldnt have to go up at all!
Our whole corporate system is a scam if you really think about it! Management tries to get workers to cut each others throat(work for less) trying to make it to the top of the Pyramid(Scam), when in reality, 9 out of 10 will never make it because their is only one position at the top!
Then on the flip side, you have companies like Kingston Technologies! They did so well one year making DSL Cards, they decided to share the money with every employee from the janitor up. The two owners of the company said," we dont need that kind of money, were going to double everyones wages for the year", and they did! The phone was ringing off the hook with people wanting to get a job there. Do you think these employees will be productive in years to come? Do you know what the business world said of them, "How stupid"!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
Blackhawk has succintly stated the problem. Everything you see to keep this economy afloat is a mirage created by govt intervention in nearly every important market and sector of business. It's amazing what tossing billions upon billions of dollars into the market (for free) will do for consumption and confidence. Stock market weak today......have the FED buy more stocks prior to closing. Gold too strong......have the cartel (JP Morgan et al) dump more gold during each attempt to run up. US Dollar too weak today.....buy more dollars and treasuries. In the end however, this bubble will be burst and the piper will have to be paid. Bush and Greenspan have just delayed the inevitable and their intervention will olnly make the final bloodletting that much more severe and lengthy. As long as the fatcats and CEO's get their slice of the pie, they have no real concern about you or I. Look for stocks to sink for many more years while gold flys. Corporate greed has not been "fixed." Witness the HUNDRED MILLION PLUS the departing stock exchange head just got to allow the foxes to rule the hen house a while longer. While the stock exchange insiders are selling off, they are urging the common guy to buy, buy, buy.....and then hold for the long term! 12,500 my az.
Unfortunately you're putting the cart before the horse. The government doesn't have any money. The money the government is giving back is the money it has taken from you and me. If the government hadn't taking the money in the first place that money would be already available in the private sector.
The longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice is it possible for an empire to rise without His aid? Benjamin Franklin
I agree that the economy is totally how people feel.
I agree that we need a new "gadget," like the TV, PC, or internet, to move ahead. Frankly, Intel and "Tech" right now don't cut it because no one but gameplayers require their new PC technology. At the office, I have a 3 year old Dell on my desk - and the only upgrade I need is a DVD. Oh, wait...... who needs a DVD at the office? Maybe Microsoft will bloat Office 2005 so bad I'll have to upgrade to a 1 Gig Pentium to run Email and Word?
I agree that corporate scandals are holding us back.
I agree that Management pay is out-of-hand. Fact is, those who don't work must be CUT before this is over. If you don't earn your keep - I would say 1/2 of you will be gone. So that doesn't bode well for all those management/sales/etc who don't work. Golf Fridays, snorkeling the Florida Keys, Pheasant hunts in S Dakota, Elk hunts in Colorado - - - - enjoy them now 'cause they'll be your Good-Ole-Days.
Politically, I think we are between a rock and a hard place. Who is going to implement fresh ideas and lead the country forward during 2004-2008? Will Bush have new ideas? Reagan and Clinton did poorly in their second terms. Dean is unelectable, Hillary is unpalatable, and Lieberman would *really* stir the Mozlem pot, so to speak!
Oh, and given the shredding of our corporate benefits for 2004 (and beyond), there will be even less disposable income at the Fish-man's household. Probably a $250 / month increase to maintain the same benefits. I guess that means I'm lazy, or else I wouldn't need to sustain benefit coverage.
I'm glad I'm a Republican. If I believed the rhetoric of the Democrats, I'd be more depressed then when the doctor suggested I had colon cancer. I think the doctor was a Democrat trying to fix something that wasn't broke, and claiming credit for fixing it. Just having one of my vents. Feel better now.

Grasso got 140 million for ruling during the most egregious corporate scandals in the NYSE's history. It was the grunts that did all the hard work on 9/11. How were they rewarded? With new rules limiting overtime pay. Greed is putting it mildly; I'd call it corruption.

Bush will be re-elected in 2004
the shocker will be when Hillary Clinton gets elected president in 2008
after years of Republican tinkering the DOW will hit 12500 sometime in 2011 setting up a re-election of Hillary

The threatened job losses ,if the new law against such unsolicited calls is ever enforced, will not be
American jobs. The law itself may be a sham. At one time I was for Free trade, but it has meant that all good jobs are
flowing to
the lowest common denominator and our balance of payments have never been worse. Just what the hell
is in this nightmare for the American worker? Many may not agree with this assessment untill the diminishment
of American jobs begins to encroach on the heretofore uneffected. Untill ones own ox is gored, we all can afford
to be staunch supporters of the new way. I think it stinks when good men and women able and willing to work
and who have been actively employed all of their lives can find equivelent work. They must take a job at part time, lower
pay and minimal if any benefits. I wonder when our National Government of either party will start looking out for
the benefit of the American working people.

printing more money. Since the government is the first to use the newly printed money, it is they that get the
full value of said money. Also by raiding the social security fund and replacing the moneywith I.O.U paper,
the government is in actuality stealing our money. The ponzi scheme in affect, would land anyone but the
government , in prison for a crime of grand larceny.
