Should I send this Bust Dollar in for regrade?

Tell me what grade you think PCGS will give on a regrade submission. Your answers will help me decide whether I send it in or not. Will post current grade later so as not to influence any opinions.

Pcgs will probably net it to 10-12 because of the scratches. If those were not there it would probably be a 15-20.

I would not crack it out because of the grafitti it may never make it into a PCGS slab again- I know they are more foregiving on these but in my opinion it's probably net graded to a lower grade because of the artwork. mike image

I'd say VG 10 on a bad day, Fine 12 on an average, and maybe 15 on a good day (for the submitter)

Lot of give and take with that coin, the details say choice fine to very fine20, but the surfaces say "little dig here, some scratches there, bit of graffiti on the chest, lightly cleaned all over" and you have to net those into the overall grade.

the coin is probably not unattractive at arm's length but the flaws jump out at you upon scrutiny.

I'll say Fine-13.5, how about that!

    Wayne,

VF details for sure. You know that they net graded that coin though. If it is in a VG holder I would send it back in. If in a Fine, keep it in the holder...

F15-VF20. Great coin Wayne, despite the small challenges. Bust dollars in any conditions are, Well, They're Bust dollars!image and I never saw a Bust dollar that I didn't like, except the ones that have holes in them and are forever impaired.

Actually, the coin does not have any scratches. Those are on the holder which is pretty beat up. There are couple of die cracks that also look like scratches in the image (e.g., the one under the portrait touching the bottom of the 1 in the date). There is the gouge in the right obverse field which is the main distraction to me.

It is currently in a PCGS VF 20 holder but the details looked nicer than that to me. Based on opinions so far, I guess I'll save my money.
  • Are you sure?Cause it REALLY looks like its on the coin and not the holder.

    Wayne,

Your image is too big. In order to properly grade, one needs to take in the entire coin at the same time. If I can only see part of each side, then I am not so confident in my grade. Besides, if the image is too big, then too many blemishes stand out.

Ok, I think I see a ChVF for your coin, possibly as high as VF35. But, I'd have a MUCH better idea if you posted more realistic images.

I think PCGS only charges $5 to reholder. I would get that done with your next submission Wayne.

i thought i saw "LS" lightly scratched into her breast, in outline block letters. That's on the holder?

BTW, I think VF20 is generous and would not try for a regrade. reholder, sure.

Yes, there is an LS. It only shows up with the light in just the right place and I had missed it before. I do see it shows up well in the images. That clinches no resubmission.

vf details, but that 1 is definitely on the low-end of ugly.

  • WOW......frankly, i'm really surprised PCGS put it in their holder at all!

The "LS" engraved letters in the chest are allowed when the graders will body bag a coin for light hairlines (which were unintentional mishandling as opposed to this treatment).

......keep it in the holder but it's likely to be a tough sell to a collector at the assigned grade level IMHO.

<< <i>WOW......frankly, i'm really surprised PCGS put it in their holder at all! >>

i'm not, there's much worse in their holders.

i've seen numerous bust coins w/ initials in EVERY holder.

sell it to wallstreetman!!! oops, he's aka joyofmoderns, so he'll have an excuse to back out.

  • Maybe I'm crazy but I'm going against the crowd. Looks like an XF coin to me all day long!!!! As long as the scratches are on the holder and not the coin. I'd send it in for regrade but wouldn't break it out of the holder.

    edited for spelling

Cleaned, scratched and it has letters engraved into the bust. You were darn lucky to get this coin into a holder!

It just shows how easy the services are on early silver. It can have many, many problems like this coin, and never see the inside of a body bag. BUT if it's early copper, the color can be totally original and yet these numb skulls, who have no knowledge about copper will bag it!

If you sent this coin to ANACS, you would get EF-40 sharpness, cleaned, scratched and graffidi, and have a net grade of F-12 to VF-20
