I had so much fun buying a dealer badge [just to look] I'm gonna do it again!

Sometimes the mobs, the dealers hogging display cases with papers and brief cases is more then I like when I'm wandering the bourse floor, so I'm gonna spring the 25 bucks it costs for a dealer badge at the largest show in my area this fall.

Anyone else, not a dealer do that just for fun [and to get first crack at anything good ?

I've done the 'early bird' thing at the FUN show, although I'm on the fence as to whether it was really worth it. The guy that wrote "Coin Collecting for Dummies" swears by it, I didn't find it that helpful. It was probably worth it, however, to observe the intensity, focus and pace of those dealers during the early hours before the public is let in. Not a good time to stop one in the Isles for a chat about how the family is doing! At a show with one or more major auctions, I find my extra time is better spent reviewing the auction items.

you get first crack but some dealers just are not ready for early bird badge guys...too busy doing deals with dealers they know... my 3 cents...

  • I think it really helps. At long beach I help out at the ANA table and get a dealers badge. When I walk around and look at coins, dealers knock off $2-3 on $30 coins and $5-10 on $60+ coins that I would have gladly paid their full price for. If you buy alot, I think it would really pay off.

Little trivia question-Who was the first Major show to offer early bird badges?

Answer: Surburban Baltimore Coin Show run By Ed Kuszmar and Gordon Berg.

Hope to meet some of you folks there in December.

    Regards
  • Having a dealer badge (as opposed to a early bird badge) can save you some money on buys at times. Except for Cameron, I let him make his own prices up anyway.

When did they start doing it? I'm curious because I had never heard of such a thing before when I started doing it in 1981 at a state show that I used to be chairman of. Not a major show, but I'm just wondering which of us did it first.
