A message from the president of CLAMODE club. (Classics:Moderns) "Why can't we get along"

You know, all of the bickering and "this and that" bashing, I have come to several conclusions.

1. I don't have time for it.
2. I work 9 hours a day and make good money , so I will spend it how I feel like it.
3. I still can't figure your what the hell doop/doops/pepperdoodles are saying and why I should care.
4. Lucybop has cool cars.
5. FC57 and Clankeye are cool cats.
and finally.

I still get as excited looking a my proof Mercury dimes as I do looking at my PCGS flag MS68 state quarters.
So I am forming the CLAMODE club (The classics:moderns alliance).
Are people who collect both , just freaks like me? or are we a dying breed?
I don't understand the polarization.
A Platinum Eagle with a wonderful family of eagles on the reverse is as exciting to me as Lafayette dollar, yes, both are different in their historical context and subject matter, but I have both, so does that make me a coin freak!

Coin freaks unite!
The proof is in the pooding: Here are my last two Ebay purchases. Your thoughts?

    Brian,

can I be brought in as a charter member?

    I have a number of coins from 1700s, 1800s, 1900s and 2000s

I think they are all cool.
  • Let me in! I'm with you. While I primarily collect Morgan $ I have started with the PCGS
flagged silver quarters. Verrry nice. I also collect 1999 to 2003 silver proof sets. Sooo,
    good luck.

Yeah, good idea........and at coin shows we can put up "safe" signs where the modern collectors can congregrate without fear of reprisal.........

WingedLiberty: I'm gonna hold off applying for membership until I see if you
let any of the riff raff in. Of course I may lose a shot at a charter membership.

Then again though, if you don't let the riff raff in then I may be ineligible anyway.image

  • That is a great looking proof Mercury. Great cameo reverse with a light cameo obverse. A little more frost and that is a pretty expensive coin. Tons of eye appeal on that little beauty!! You did well. I couldn't believe I was looking at an ultimatecameo auction when I saw no reserve and a low initial bid.

You know, I was talking about this to a co-worker. He laughed. The same arguments are found in ham radio, which is his hobby. Same "morse code readers" vs. "non-morse code readers." It's the human condition.

    The five answers....

    1. Its entertainment.

    2. Work is kept at 7 Hrs or less if at all possible.

    3. A bunch of jibberish.

    4. So do I.

    5. You are correct.

And the conclusion is that really most do not hate either a Modern or a Classic coin but they must stir the pot for the Entertainment value here. Of course there are some Die Hard folks that do take a firm stance one way or the other. Same, same with the Plastic versus Raw subject. Down with those ancient Rawbies.

  • Brian,

You are something else! You have such a great attitude and your enthusiasm is nothing short of effusive! You seem to have the ability to blend, adapt and flow, and always appreciate the intrinsic aspects of numismatics. I envy those traits, and if more collectors, or dealers for that matter, subscribed to your approach and enjoyment of the "hobby", we would all be more content in our lives.

As you say, "life is too short".

    Richard (Morganluver):
I appreciate the kind words. After seeing you at the Tampa show giving away your raffle winnings to a YN who was about 9 years old and seeing the look of excitement in his eyes, That almost brought a tear to my eye, so in response to what you said, the feeling is mutual. I wish more forum members have the opportunity to meet you in person and share your passion for the hobby. By the way, MOE (Mother of all Eagles). , your icon coin, which I saw in person, well, what can I say, I am still dreaming about that coin.
  • My wife collects statehood quarters and I feel everyone has a right to collect whatever they want!!!

    Suprised???

I am not surprised. I collect Barber halves in EF-AU, both PCGS and NGC. I also love proof Liberty nickels. I love statehood quarters also. What I am trying to say is that I would have alot of fun at your house.

  • Brian,

I remember when I first was bitten by the "coin bug". I was around 10-11 and my Mom took me to see a retired coin dealer(The Colonel) who traded out of his home. I don't remember how she found him, but it was a great experience. He had a full sized walk-in safe in his home and he showed me some minor coins in 2x2s and gave me some Indian cents and a few other coins. That was the moment in time that got me started with my on-going love affair for coin collecting, and it has not waned! If I can be instrumental in instilling that same interest and passion in a YN with a similar gesture, then I, and this great hobby, have been sustained in some small way. This small token made me feel like a kid again and the look on this young boy's face brought back great memories image

Oh yes, Show us your SP-68 and PL-69 Canadian dollars.
Also , all Commonweath coinage is welcome.

All darksiders are welcome due to the fact that they are mostly all civilized and take tea very properly.
  • wingedlibertywingedliberty Posts: 4,805 ✭✭✭
Darksiders also take their tea properly by using natural tea leaves in the cup rather than those pesky tea bags. This makes them closer to civilization. Cheers!

    Brian,

    Hell of a great idea!

We need one memebership requirement in addition to liking coins:

You must own some sort of slabbed modern coin, preferably a super high grade Ike!!! or somehting else hihg grade.

    Count me in as well!

    James

PS We'll take typetone, even though he collects from the darkside as well.

    Cool 53-S!!!
