I don't mean a collection that gets pedigreed or talked about for generations. But what makes a collection for you?

A group of coins with some common theme or characteristics.

  • I agree with Stuart.
A display of coins that shows some continuity or , at least some logic.
  • Coins that are admired and loved by their owner make for a collection. As stated in my sig line its.....simply for the love of the game. Coins owned by Investors and hoarders do not make for a collection. If you can't look at each coin you own and recall why you bought it and what makes it special to you then it is not part of a collection.
  • In order for it to be a collection I feel that it needs to have some sort of goal. Otherwise it is an accumulation not a collection. Now the goal doesn't have to be the traditional "Date and mint set" and can be defined in many ways, but "Round shiny things in PCGS slabs" doesn't cut it.

Anything. Whatever you want it to be. "Coins I own" is a perfectly valid collection criteria, IMHO.
  • The collector, what ever the collector wants it to be
