"BUY THE HOLES" not modern slabs.
Regards, MapMaker >>

What do you collect now, Mapmaker? >>

I collect only Statehood Quarters now and its a lot of fun. I get 10 rolls every issue and search for that ever elusive "Gem" for my grandson's Display Map that i designed and had made. I have many maps left over and I have given some away to Youth Groups and promote Youth in Numimatics at our local coin club in Oceanside CA. I have all the back issues of State Quarters and supply many friends and young people with them. My Display Map has spaces for all 100 quarters and adhesive 5/8" stick on squares to "Fun" collect out of circulation.
I will send anyplace in U.S if board members have any youngsters that may want one. Just PM me and pay $5 for priority mail & handling. I will donate the $1.15 Handling charge to charity and take the loss. I am really having a ball getting kids into the hobby. Limited supply, so for youngsters only. Please!
Thanks for asking. Regards, MapMaker.

P.S. I reserve the right to terminate this giveaway at anytime if it gets to much for me to handle.

Lord M: Why do you suppose that the Trade Dollar was holed at 9:00 instead of 12:00 like the other coins?

I assume that most of them were worn as charms at some time and that a hole at the at 12:00 position allowed them to be worn upright with head on top.

Sorry, FatMan, I couldn't let an opening like that pass. image

Thanks- they are a nice affordable way to pick up some history. The 1783 Spanish 4-reales piece in the middle was a detector find- a buddy of mine dug it near Saint Augustine, Florida. I swapped him a big shark tooth for it.

Don- yes, the Trade dollar is authentic. It's got a counterstamp on the reverse.

I got a nice holey 1827 French 5-franc piece yesterday, as a gift from a forum member. GaCoinGuy came down for a visit and we went out detecting. I already had an 1841 5-franc. Big silver like that with nice designs is hard to pass up. I gave him a holey 1853-O half for his keychain. That would have been on my vest but for the fact that somebody really murdered it- it has three relatively modern holes in it.

I don't really know. Sometimes people just holed them, with little regard for the design. Often they were holed at the top of the reverse, which means the hole goes through the date. I don't like that as much. I do prefer them holed at 12:00 on the obverse, so they'll hang upright on the Holey Coin Vest. But some pieces like that Trade dollar are appealing enough that I still buy them, even if the hole is "off" a little.

You Hi-jacked my "Hole" thread with the Images of your "Holes!" And thats not the "Hole" story. I enjoyed your "Holes" very much. I might have a "Hole' in my head but if I drill a "Hole" in the head of my large cent would you pay a "Hole" lot more for my "Holed" cent than some one else might pay if my cent was "Hole" and not "Holed?"

Then you're suggesting that we buy all the rare old classics raw. Maybe I'm misinfomed but
there's a rumor going around that raw old coins have hidden problems?

You're right. I just don't get it. My understanding is that you are unhappy with your
past collecting because you did worse financially than you expected. Apparently you
lost some money on coins that weren't old key dates. That's really is a shame but I do
not see the connection to moderns. Did you have any key date moderns? Did you have
any moderns at all? There are lots of ways to collect but what about those of us who
don't want only graded key dates? Are we supposed to collect those because of your
experience? Are we supposed to not collect key date moderns because of your lack of
    experience? Seriously...

    ...I just don't get it.
