First it was the loss of Dennis to our registry, still have not recovered from that. All of the back and forth banter is missed. Second the intense competition for very few coins has made it hard to find the last coins for the collection. Prices have been driven up on the coins that were liked for the set. Restraint has been shown though not to buy something that is not liked. Restraint....brand new descriptive word for me as little has been shown in the past for anything. Fall starts next week and if things go as usual more coins will be offered For Sale because of people staying closer to home after the Summer vacations and other activities.
Outside of that I am as happy as a Western Meadowlark that is singing in the Oregon High Desert. Ahhh it is the State Bird also.
Sure hope this does not ever become work. If it does I'm gone. Work can be Fun but for the most part work is a chore that is necessary for decent survival. To me chores are not Fun period.
Now with all of that above Jibberish out of the way...how about a Original Thick Skinned Merc to view.... opps had to Log In to get the picture to show.

I have consistently used the registry as an on-line inventory. So, in that respect I am having as much fun as ever with the registry!
But, in truth, the fun comes in with the people on this board and across the street. I have "met" lots of interesting people, have learned new things about numismatics, and have been exposed to new modes of collecting. So I am continuing to have a TON of fun. I do, however, agree with Ken about a certain sadness when a good member departs...

P.S.: And, Pat I must say that I HATE the fact that your on-line inventory of Merc's tops my on-line inventory of Mercs!!! ( )
Ken
I finally get a set or two registered.
I just read your comment "across the street" to the poster who sort of dumped cold water on the registry. I thought your post there was right on the money--especially the comment to the effect that if you don't like the registries and don't participate, then don't bother to comment on them. I never understand why so many of us dump on what others collect. Come on: 99.99% of the population must think us incredibly odd, so why do we dump on others who share the same general love for collecting?
One further point about the registry: Some time ago I posted on these boards a thread which suggested that the registry sets are the "Whitman" coin albums of the 21st century. Lucy's comment across the street was in this vein, as she mentioned that she likes to fill the holes in the registry sets just as so many of liked to fill the holes in coin albums in the 1950s and 1960s.

I am also building a complete set of proof state quarters in flag holders PR69DCAM (these are just about guarenteed to lose money, but the set is fun... I plan on building a couple or frames on hanging them on the wall!
Having a blast thanks for asking.

Great post.
There is really very little difference between collecting any two things whether it's
ancient coins or antique furniture. It takes a certain mindset and a real love of his-
tory, rarity, and/or nostalgia to pay more for something than its face value. There's
really not a dimes worth of difference between any two collectors.
I love to sit and talk with other collectors whether they collect post cards or antique
computers.
I had just had my fill of people dumping on "Collectors" that just happen to be in the Registry. I never have understood thier stance against other collectors either. I would bet you almost anything that if you met one of these Registry Poo Poo people in person and started a discussion about coins it would be enjoyable for both parties. I wonder if at the end of the discussion all of thier thoughts would be changed if you told them you were a Registry Member....I think not.
Anyway I was not trying to be harsh but was trying to get a point accross. Tough crowd over there at times.
Edit to Add: This Registry thing with people is alot like the Ford vs Chevy deal. Usually a person likes one but not both and some can be very addamant with thier stance.

Whoever is on the registry is having fun, if your having fun, and others can't catch up or have not a clue they will put us down - insecurity.
Personally I'm having a blast - ditto with all the positive comments above from all.

No need to explain enjoyment.

At times the Registry is a labor of love, especially when you try to add photos to the set. It can be a lot like work, but it's rewarding to see good images of my coins online, and to be able to share them with others. That alone is a good enough reason to have the Registry. I've shown pictures of my coins to a few people at work, and one is thinking seriously about entering the hobby. So it's a good way to recruit new collectors.
Before the Registry, it was difficult to find collectors with similar interests. Merc collectors are an especially friendly and supportive group.
Give this up? Never!

was a good place to register my coins in case of theft. Little did I know that awards were given out yearly .LOL So Its the same as an online invertory. If and when its not fun anymore I'll be gone. Except for the occasional troll, this place is great and so is coin collecting.

I absolutely understand now, why people enjoy it, and think it's a worthwhile pursuit.
I do remember, when I first got to the forum, I sold a coin on the BST board, and the person who bought it really wasn't interested in any description of the coin--all he wanted to know was the certificate number. That kind of thinking still eludes me, but I have enjoyed very much looking for the coins, photographing them and entering them in the set. And whereas I know that my Carver set is probably never going to mean much to anyone but me, I find it an enjoyable activity, and it has broadened my understanding of what you guys are doing over here.

I am having fun working at it.
And the friendly people here are the BEST
Yes it's still fun for me too!
