Crazy prices at LB

I saw a nice pcgs ms66 53 quarter. The seller wanted $450 for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why was he asking so much for it? One word:

Color.

I learned a valuable lesson about big coin shows and prices. You can throw out the price lists on nice toned coins and there were a lot of them, many of them absolute beauties. I also think that the best way to buy toned coins is at a show. These coins would never sell on ebay at these prices.

Don't discount Ebay. When you deal with reputable sellers and do repeat business, you will get to know the caliber of their material and trust them more. There are many on this forum who sell on Ebay and have exceptional material.
I agree with you as far as your assesment of the price valuations for toned coins. Remember that its always on a case by case basis. You have to love the coin. You are the consumer of the aesthetics. Others may agree or disagree, but you are the temporary custodian. Enjoy the hobby.

coins with color now a days is bringing a lot of money if it is attractive toning. It's like the stock market, it may continue to get stronger and on the other hand it just may flop

color coins are queer to price. I seen super nice album toned Franklins, rosies, Jeffs, in the bargan box at the coin shop but if same color is on a morgan, walker, slq or barb the price are super crazy

Assuming that is one with arrows and rays, that would be such a great deal that I would assume that it is counterfeit! I paid $220 for one in just AU-50. I did not see any MS-66 quarters for less than $4000, and those were the common dates, a '53 would be a better date, not that they are rare, it is just that everyone wants want. Please let me know what dealer that was.

I assumed Mikey was referring to 1953, not 1853.

It sounds to me like the best way to SELL toned coins is at a show. The last time I went to LB I saw 3 of those nicely toned '45-S Mercury dimes (the ones with the fasces untoned), all priced 2-3 times higher than the ones I bought on eBay and mine was nicer.
  • There were many bargains out there. I picked up some really nice coins in some of the dealers junk boxes - some of the coins fresh back from the services with grades the dealers weren't happy with.

1953(p) and (d) quarters in grades MS66 and above generally DO NOT come pretty toned. They are worth a nice premium to serious Wash quarter collectors pursuing beautiful examples of each date. The (s) coins do come a bit prettier from that year though.

IMHO, that price is fair for a beautiful 1953(p) quarter in MS66. image
