There was indeed a flood. They didn't let dealers in until 11:30, and the public until after noon. I guess a big water line broke. The bourse was dry when I walked around, but I didn't have much time to ask dealers how their inventory did. I'm at the Long Beach airport waiting for my flight back home. I can't give a definitive report on the show, but I will say that it seemed pretty upbeat. There was a lot of nicer stuff for sale, and I saw commems from circulated to high grade mint state, slabbed and raw. Stacks had some really neat patterns on display. I think they will be auctioning them in October. I saw 3 gold patterns in their case that were really cool. One, a 10 dollar gold pattern was exceptional I thought. Great cameos and mirrors. I got to meet a few more members today, including Frattlaw, Cameron, and Mikey. Also met up with several that I have met before. That's is one of the best reasons to go to shows. Meeting forum members. It's really cool to get to talk to guys that you usually only get to talk to here on the boards. Plus when you meet with a lot of the dealers, you find out that NOT ALL DEALERS ARE TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF. There are some of course, but most of the ones who regularly post here are great folks. Like you and me they are working there butts off trying to make the best of life.s
One collector I talked to said he was having trouble finding nicer VF+ through XF Barber coins. Others seemed to find what they were after. Most of the folks I talked to that I know where buying and/or selling something. Maybe not high ticket items, although I know of a couple guys who did spend some big bucks, but business was taking place. I was looking for a nice AU $10 dollar gold piece for a type piece but didn't find what I was looking for. As most of you know, a really nice AU gold coin can beat the pants off of many MS61s or MS62s.
In a way, the flood was a blessing in disguise. At one point, while we were waiting to get in, there must have been 10 forum members in a group chatting with each other. It was great. mdwoods
A pipe on the ceiling burst on Saturday night and flooded the floor of the conevntion. The tables directly below were broken in the waterfall of water and the coins were everywhere according to what I heard. The Long Beach show contacted the dealers that were really affected and their tables were empty on Saturday. It not only hurt their business, but it must have affected some of the inventory, especially the raw coins.
