AUCTIONS VS DEALERS

Just curious as to what forum members prefer for the purposes of adding to their collections.

Auctions can be expensive, (due to the frenzy of the bidders), and mistakes seem to be costly to correct.

Dealing with reputable dealers appears to be less painful, options for return of an item not deemed to be acceptable seems easy, and once a dialogue has been established, one has an extra pair of eyes working for them.

As always, I look forward to your opinions.

Q: Where do you think dealers get the coins?
    A: Auctions.

I like auctions because it puts me on equal footing with the dealer. If I buy from a dealer, I'm paying a premium over any auction price.
  • Ditto what Barry said.

Ditto, but only after you've become proficient enough to know a good coin from a bad one. Also, why limit yourself?? Dealers often get coins from customers that never appear at auction. I find a combination approach best.
