Since I spent mightily at Nationals, I don't need to push for more than Friday night this time around. By December, I probably will be looking to add part of Saturday too.image

  • what year / type of raw cards do you find the most at this show? more modern than vintage? lots of NM-MT few MINT cards? all baseball no non-sports cards?

i am going to start traveling to some other shows (not much new in NH) and i don't want to make an eight hour trip for 1999 basketball (not that there is anything wrong with that image )

    Chris,

I will spend my 4 hours rummaging through raw cards from the mid to late 60's baseball. Most of what I find is crap... Finding the NM/MT or better raw has become a downright brutal exercise. There are a few dealers that have it, but you have to put in the time weeding through the NM and EXMT cards that look great from 3 feet.

If I were in your shoes, I'm not sure that I would travel the 8 hours for the Fort (I might - I just don't have to make that decision). I drive 90 minutes and I'm there and I can usually find $500 worth of NM/MT raw anywhere from 60 to 72 during my time there. But, once you start factoring in hotel and 400 miles worth of gas each way, plus food - your costs are significantly higher than mine will be.

  • Chris KK,

Ft. Washington is in my opinion the best standard show (4 times a year) in the metro philly area. The only place to find decent vintage dealers. If you're into vintage it's definitely wortht the trip every so often.

The Fort has not been very good in my opinion the last 2 or 3 times. I have a hard time finding very much there. But I will still be there Friday with my "get in 15 min early pass"

    Bob-gaspipe
  • i think i will pass on this one but try to make the next. anyone know of some good dealers between NH and the Fort?

where else do people get their, high quality, raw cards from?

    - local dealers
    - ebay (unopened material)
    - internet (other dealers)

Friday at Ft. Washington looked to be busy with virtually all of the usual major dealers present. I was there from 1 to 5pm and when I left long line of collectors ready to come in.

Among the major vintage dealers there were 707, Superior, Mile High, Kurtz Kards, Greg Bussineau, Shoebox, Skerbes, Dave Forman, Bill Goodwin, Joe Checkowicz, Piedmont, Peter Lalos, Joe Tauriello, East Coast Sports Cards,Andy Madec, Paul Stark and Shoeless Joe's. Whoops also the guys from Mastronet but not to buy cards. Alan Rosen was in a wheelchair--do not know what was wrong.

Did a major transaction with Chris Porter who continues to be the easiest major dealer to do business wilth. He sells high quality cards I need at reasonable prices, buys back lower grade ones I have at80% and gives me a major line of credit--the guy is the best.

Also thanks to Jay Wolt who diligently puts together high quality sets for the fun of it and then sells them to me near his cost. Thanks Jay--love doing business with you.

Among the collecting luminaries there was none other than Mike Rakosi, the king of vintage basketball ,and the equally famous collector simply known as "The Rabbi". Mike has the number 1 set for 1948 Bowman posted. Not posted are his 57 Topps and 61 Fleer which is above 9.1 and above Branca's set.
Also met Dave Lemon for first time--good guy and Dave we will figure a way to do business.

As far as grading companies, PSA and SGC there but GAI had plane troubles and arrived late. Overall, SGC a little bit of a greater presence but primarily in modern cards --GAI cards were seen at a number of tables--probably a slight uptick from last time.

But the best thing--not one Kellogg card to be seen at the whole show.

  • << <i>Alan Rosen was in a wheelchair--do not know what was wrong. >>

There is plenty wrong with him. Most of which is beyond any medical treatment that he could seek since it is at the level of his soul (Vargha suffers from the same affliction). It is however refreshing to learn that he is or was suffering in some capacity. I am speculating that the wheelchair requirement was as a result of a long overdue ass whipping or maybe he finally had that item removed from his rear that has made him such a vile person for so long.

    Smiling,

Actually I did see a bunch of Kelloggs cards down towards the SGC end of the floor. That part was pretty much empty last night, and on my search mission for a fellow set registrant, I may have scored a few nice ones. They were mid 70's and newer, in card saver I's. I was also told several full sets of K cards changed hands prior to the show opening to the general public, but have no more details. Does anyone know?

One dealer told me he just got back 40 complete sets(there is no end to the supply) graded from psa so probably it was him.

Didn't see much in the way of Kellogg's last night - but ran into Steve, EJ and Jeff. Picked up some nice 71 High Numbers and a 71 Rose that I pretty sure will grade out 8 as well.

I was checking out the inventory of one dealer from Virginia that had a nice assortment of Callahan's, Kahns and some other regional stuff from the 50's. I may eventually take on a nice dog food set from the 50's or a weiner set from the 60's.

  • Sounds like FW was a strong show, which is always good news for the hobby. For those who live to bash other's collecting preferences, I'll just remind you that this is just a hobby, and not exactly one of the most important things in life.

My family got a dose of "real life" last Thursday when we lived to talk about hurricane Isabel. I'll just say it was an "eventful" 16 hours. We got off lucky with only a couple of very large trees down, smashed satellite dishes, and just a few shingles off the roof. No one was hurt, and to steal a line from Walter Lord, it was truly a "night to remember". Our power has been off since Thursday afternon, and we don't really expect to get it back until mid week at best. The Dahlgren naval base which is less than 2 miles from where I live clocked sustained winds at 87 MPH with 101 MPH gusts. If you really want to get life's priorities straight, then I suggest that a visit to a little Potomac River town called Colonial Beach (which is 15 minutes from my place). Little CB got trashed but good.

Living through an experience like that certainly gives one proper perspective on life and makes a hobby like this all the more enjoyable. That's why I have little patience with anyone who goes out of their way to trash the collecting preferences of others. Cards are just one thing I collect, so if you want to collect bottlecaps, frisbees, or banjo strings, then more power to you!

Sorry I couldn't make FW, but maybe next time. In the meantime, we are all breathing easier, and enjoying the "music" of chain saws and home generators.

Anyone have any spare D cell batteries?

PS - My 1972 set is now at 51%, so I should move up a couple of notches.

I went to the show on Sat for the first time sice I moved to Ohio in 1999. Needless to say I feel again as I always did that this is THE best show. I've built half my collection there. The 350 mile trip was made at the first table I stopped at when I found a 1981 Kelloggs Progression Proof Set of Stargell for only $25. A steal at that price. Also found an unused 67 coke cap and several 62 Post Canadians for my set. Was it just me or did it seem that the dealers of new cards were mostly placed in the back? Great show.

  • Kimo,

Welcome to the boards. I haven't seen you here before - I guess I missed your posts over the past month.

I am also a Stargell collector and so are several others here on the boards - Basilone & Machodoc.

Are you going to list a Stargell set on either the Basic or Master registry (or are you already there)?

Let me know if you have anything that I may need. I'm paying top dollar right now for Stargell's - just ask John image

This '65 Kahns Weiners card is still my favorite Stargell from my collection:

  • Basilone,

You must have me confused with someone else. My pockets are anything but deep. I do however sell to support my collecting. Helps quite a bit. As far as virtualizard, I've just begun to collect the graded versions of Stargell. My sickness runs deep as I have found it necessary for example to not only have one of all his mainstream cards, but all of them autographed too. Can't help it he was my boyhood hero. I also find it necessary to have multiples of everything for no particular reason. The PSA kick started accidentally when I bought a 1970 Kelloggs in 8, just because it was a good deal. Well 25+ 8s or 9s later and I'm hooked. Seems that at some level ungraded cards are almost worthlesss compared to their graded counterparts. Any way, nice to meet some fellow Stargell collectors, we should swap lists and help each other out.
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭

    Kimo-

I wasnt talking about you...its our friend JEB you have to worry about .... "virtualized" on these boards. JEB has just sold off some serious sets and has some extra cash to go after those Stargells we all cherish. With October 31st coming up in a couple of months (the registry awards)...now may be the time to sell off some cards to him (if you think you can get them again in the future).

    John
  • Another Fort Washington observation: Is the guy from 707 really serious. I love walking past his tables in Pittsburgh and Philly for the past 10 years to see his prices. My favorites from this Saturday were: 1969 Clemente PSA 8 for $500 and 1960 Berra PSA 2 for $25. Does he really sell cards at these prices?! I've heard that he rents the display cases and that is how he makes his money.
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭

Let me know if you have extras.

  • Are you strictly PSA or do you collect all of his other stuff too?
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭
You should tell 707 that yours truly paid $546.03 for a 1969 Clemente PSA 9 last week. See what type of reaction you get from him.....

Remember.....you always get ripped off and you get terrible service buying off other collectors on eBay.

    LOL..

Strictly PSA my man.....its the company I trust (the most).

    John
  • What I meant was do you collect Stargell stuff like proofs, venezuelans, cellos, etc. Some of these such as the venezuelans may not get much higher than a 6 but the rarity is incredible. I agree that PSA is the best.
    Another 707 beauty : 1969 Stargell PSA 8: $75. I paid $28 on ebay.
