Blacklists are lists of known spammers that were updated continuously. Email servers subscribed to these and when a email came in, it was checked against one of these blacklists. If the sender were on it, then the email was marked as spam and automatically deleted.
Now the bad guys attacked and defeated one of the good guys because of this DDOS attack. The person who owned and managed the site gave up because the attack was too strong. I changed his blacklists from just the bad guys to every single person in the world. If you subscribed to the lists, no email of any kind went through. Email administrators had to reconfigure their email servers to NOT use the blacklist so the good email went through.
Is that clearer?

The company that I run my T1 with, Newsouth Communications, completely shut down all emails yesterday for about 12 hours dealing with viruses. I have an email address that I have not used for about 3 months that has received about 50 virus messages a day for the past 3 or 4 days. Same could be affecting your provider.
You should feel lucky that no Email is coming through.
Last week on one day I got over 500 messages. It took me over 6 hours to figure out what the heck was going on. At the end I finally had to Block all Email and even some of the Forum Members that had shown up in this attack. Also included , and blocked, was messages from PCGS and NGC. I have a idea where the attack got its start on my computer as most of the messages were from coin related people that would have used this one site that I got a message from on the day of the attack.
Anyway after a few days I opened up the Email to run regularly and so far so good.
