Let's get serious about the "Box of 20"...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 23,976 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you were going to limit yourself to 20 coins, what would you buy?

I think I'd collect pattern large cents. A complete set would be about 20 coins. It would probably take 10 years and less than 200K to put together the finest possible set.

Accented Hair Kennedy Half dollars. Of course, that would mean I'd have to dispose of the <currently> extra 2 1/2 boxes. image

That depends, can I fantasize about the money needed to buy them to ?

If so, I'd like to buy Cardinals best Bust dollars, if not, the best quality seated & Barber quarters and halves I could afford.

1 through 20 of the top 100 coins as described in the recent book.....not really.

I would get seldom seen coins [Stella, Chain, Proof $20 Lib., CC Halves, cameo Trade, etc.] in the best condition I could find.

Here's my 20 in no particular order. Except where noted, all would be type pieces, slightly better date than common, as high a grade as possible.

    1. A matte proof $10 Indian.
    2. A $10 capped bust gold piece.
    3. A cameo proof Morgan.
    4. A cameo proof seated dollar.
    5. A PKOK toned C/N IKE in PCGS MS67 (If you're laughing, you've never seen one)
    6. A cameo proof Barber half.
    7. A mint state capped bust half
    8. A proof drapped bust dollar.
    9. A mint state flowing hair half.
    10. A proof Type one Buffalo Nickel
    11. A beautifully toned 1912S mint state Liberty nickel.
    12. A purple toned proof IHC.
    13. A chain cent.
    14. A PCGS MS68 Walker with beautiful, original toning
    15. A PCGS PR68 Mercury dime with beautiful rim toning.
    16. A type one FH SLQ.
    17. A beautifully toned 1953S Franklin in PCGS MS66FBL
    18. A blast white high relief Peace Dollar.
    19. A Gobrecht Dollar
    20. A proof flying eagle.

Somewhere I would fit in a coiled hair Stella.image

20 common date, but high grade and attractively toned seated half dimes. I'll create a small world in a small box.

    I collect circulated U.S. silver

    1. The 10 "commonly accepted" GSA CC dollars...78-85, 90, 91
    2. MS63+ versions of the rest of the CC Morgans...89, 92, 93....that takes me to 13
    3. A gem St Gaudens $20...14

    And 2 Frankies, 1 SBA, 2 Sacs, and a Shriver commem ...20image

how could a series collector use the box of 20 approach?

I'd have to boil down a complete type set to 20 coins. I don't think I'd be satisfied with that. I guess I could forget about gold and go for the most basic types. Still I'd feel like I was missing stuff.

However the concept is interesting. I did greatly improve my collection when I starting selling stuff. I realized I had lots of coins that were not helping my collection. Forcing myself to focus was a very good thing. I don't even miss any coins.

Well I did miss two coins. I bought a better example of one. I let the owner of the other know I'd like to buy that one back sometime in the future...

how could a series collector use the box of 20 approach?

Depends on the series. I thought my set of pattern large cents was a good idea. Here are a couple more:

    1941-47 short set of walkers.

1793 cents by die variety. (There are 22 in a complete set, but there are enough NC's that you'll never fill the box.)

    5. 1913 Buffalo nickel - proof

    6. 1916-D winged liberty dime - ms

    10. High relief Peace dollar - ms or proof

    11. Pan-Pac $2.50 - ms

    12. $3 princess, any date - ms or proof

    13. 1879 Stella, flowing hair (let's at least be realistic) - proof

    14. 1997 $5 Jackie Robinson - ms (so sue me)

    15. 1908 $10 Indian - proof

    16. 1907 $20 St. Gaudens, high relief - ms

    17. 1987 $25 gold bullion - proof

    18. 1915-s $50 octagonal - ms

    and one space to spare....

I guess the question is, is the half dime a different denomination than a nickel image

Or, you could go for a "double denomination" error coin for that 20th spot.

As for me, I would go with something like a set of New Orleans seated quarters.

As far as I'm concerned, 5 cents is 5 cents. The double denominations will be duking it out as I already have a 6 center and an 11 center, leaning to the 11...

How about a variety set of 1794 Large Cents, each coin in the "box of twenty" in strictly uncirculated condition by EAC standards, and each coin a different die variety? Of the 56 1794 varieties( not counting subvarieties or NC's ), there are only 28 or so varieties that exist in true uncirculated condition( by EAC standards), excluding two unc. varieties impounded in the ANS. This would make a great "box of twenty", but you would need to be very patient as many of the coins are in strong hands. Probably a twenty or thirty year project!

hey, i'm already working on the perfect 20-coin-box, which is a U.S. denomination type set. if you include the half-dime, that is. it makes a nice set of different metals and different series'. by it's very nature, it has a sprinkling of modern and classic coins. for mine, i'm going to try to make each successive denomination older, which will result in a bit of a logjam around 1860-1875 because of the 20-cent piece. oh yeah, the $3 and $4 are excluded from that rule!!!
