Bessemer Show Day One - A Wealth of Knowledge

Well - tonite I got my fill of Southern Gold and Tone dollars to satisfy even the most ravenous of coin appetites. I finally got to meet GSAGUY in person and he's a great guy to hang out with. He showed me some of his "cute" Morgan Dollars and they left you breathless. Each time he opened a box you thought there couldn't be any better - and then came the next one - and all you could do is shake your head. So - that was to my left - to my right was our friend Dahlonega with his complete sets of Dahlonega quarter and half eagles. Awesome in themselves, but not nearly as awesome as a tray of Patterns that would make any mere mortal's eyes bulge. The lot included an aluminum Stella, accompanied by a copper Stella, with several coiled hair metric dollars thrown in for good measure. U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E!

If any of you have a chance to stop by and see this stuff - make a point of it - you'll drool all the way home!

The rest of the bourse seemed pretty active on this first day of dealer setup - lots of deals for higher quality material seemed to be the rule of the day. Saw lots of type pieces, as well as just about anything else you might be looking for. It promises to be a great show - so get ready to have a blast if you can make it in! image

PS - My buddies Newkid (ANDY) and FiveCents (PAUL) are also exhibiting and have great coins as well - make sure you stop by and say howdy (or whatever it is you say image)

Probably a good idea. My dad drives in his sleep fairly often. If he's driving while awake, he's usually reading his mail and writing checks and/or filling out deposit slips. I think there's a permanent imprint of my hand on the inside of the passenger's side door.

Well - today was the first day of the show - if you saw Jeff's post (GaCoinGuy) you got a pretty fair review of the goings on of the show. I got to spend quite a bit of time with John Morris (FatMan), Danaca (Tassa) (Eat your heart out TwoDogs image), Andy (NewKid), ArtR (ArtR), and of course GSAGUY and DAHLONEGA. Rather than bore you with accolades, I will tell you that I spoke quite at length to GSAGUY on his upcoming book on GSA dollars. From the sounds of it it's going to be a must read for anyone who collects Morgans. The book (forthcoming sometime in the next year I hope) will contain information valuable for both novices and experienced collectors and I predict that it will become a standard for Morgan collectors in the future. In addition to sharing his oodles of knowledge on Morgans in general, GSA's, toned dollars, and coins etc., we also talked about the possiblity of a book on toned coinage - so if we start a campaign to get him to take on this project as well, we'll be able to milk all his vast knowledge on the subject. Another great guy that I got to meet today is Art Ricci - yet another walking encyclopedia on coins. What a great opportunity to just sit back and let these guys fill my few brain cells with all their collective knowledge. We had an awesome day, capped by a very nice dinner hosted by my friend Dahlonega. Can't get any better than this! (I even forgot to sell any of my coins - though I did sell a few of Marty's - great huh?)

Well - you'd think that I learned something along the way about toned coins, but maybe not - I did pick up two toned halves that looked "neat" for what they are. I believe them to be album toned coins, but hell - sometimes these are really hard. At least when I showed the coins to GSAGUY he didn't yell - FAKE! within three seconds of seeing them as he did when I showed him and Art a bright blue toner another dealer had. I thought Art was going to fall off his chair - hey - these things are a learning experience! image

Here are the coins I bought - I don't know if I'll ever get them graded, but they are kinda cool. Enjoy! image
