Re-engraved Standing Liberty on ebay

Here's a good one. Everyone check your SLQ's and tell me if you find a Type-2 with hair flowing back like that. Mine don't show it, perhaps I own a bunch of fakes.

1918 MS-67 Auction

I won't even comment on the seller's claim that he's seen worse than this cleaned AU coin graded MS-68.

It is a re-engraved SLQ. I also had one for show and tell purpose. I also saw one in Cline's case about 10 years ago.

Indeed, the two I saw are all in AU or better grade (as this one). $25 is reasonable for a show and tell piece image

Jon, you left out the part about it also appearing to be A.T.image

And the heavy "die-polish" lines on the reverse extend over the rim from 3:00 to 6:00 amazingly all in the same direction.image

    It may not be engraved.

It could be a MERCURY quarter.

I know it's not considered netequitte to post a private e-mail, but what the
    heck!

I wrote the seller of that 1918 SLQ and told him, among other things (which
you'll read here) that the hair has been retooled and the coin has been whizzed
or harshly cleaned. You can read his response now.

I'll not respond to his response. These guys always protest that what they are selling is absolutely genuine/origiinal.

eBay is no help on this type of thing.

Brilliant. We've seen this before. Somebody with a crooked auction replies to emails with unintelligible gibberish. Is it the same person?

I wonder at what point this guy dropped out of school. Maybe sixth grade? What he wrote back to Ira makes absolutely no sense, and half of his auction text was misspelled.

Someone put a lot of work into the coin.

It's going to fool a lot of bidders.

I have to give the guy an A+ on the image.

Something tells me he just might end the auction early.image

$20 shipping and insurance on this piece of junk? As Barnum said, there must be one born every minute!

The high bidder has over 2000 feed backs on ebay. Now either he's the dumbest guy around, a shill, or another scam artist who wants to flip the coin to a higher level of deceit.

I wonder how high the reserve is?

what is the deal with the extra line on the right leg?

could this be a 3 inch coaster?

it looks like diestruck copy rather than tooled - or someone spent lots of time on it

That "feathered back" hairdo was popular in the 80's. Looks like Liberty used some styling gel or mousse, and brushed her hair back with 'er fingers. image

It's really unfortunate that someone took the time & energy to ruin that coin.
