Anyone know "Mike's Coin Chest" in CA?

I recently went to the show in Chicago and wanted to get a hold of him. I can't find him on the web or in the book.... Does he post here? Thanks.

Mike's an interesting fellow. He does the major shows in California and I've seen him at a few others around the country as well.

He handles some major coins and often displays the collections of some of his clients. Again...MAJOR coins.

It appears that coinguy1 has sent you Mike's contact info so I'll not try to dig it up as well.

If he's got something you're interested in, I'd certainly recommend talking to him.

  • Mike Bobb owns Mike's Coin Chest in Torrance Ca. He is a straight talking, straight shooting dealer who sells some of the finest Morgans And walkers on the market today. All my dealings with him both buying and selling have been excellent. He is also a very knowledgable and helpful rare coin pro. His website is mikescoinchest.com. Dave Weygant

Mike sells GORGEOUS blast white coins.

Also, I seriously doubt he has ever been accused of selling anything too cheaply.
    When in doubt, don't.

I bought that Benson PCGS AU50 1799 $ from Mike Bobb for around $800 over his bid in the Benson sale. I almost didn't buy it but bit my lip and did. I made a good profit on that coin.
  • I bought some PQ gold coins from Mike. I felt I paid a good price for them. One upgraded. One is very high end for the grade with only a handful higher so is one of the finest known for the date. The attached gold dollar is proof like.

I see this is a very old thread but was wondering, is Mike still in business? I've been to the website a number of times, but the Morgan inventory does not seem to change. And I submitted an inquiry on one occasion, but never received a response.

Mike Bobb passed away coming up on 4 years ago (RIP). HIs son Shaun took over the business about 4 years prior to that. But Shaun was involved in the business back to about when this thread originally started. Not sure why you did not get a response, perhaps he missed the inquiry. But I see his number is listed at the bottom of the webpage you linked. Try calling or texting (again) and he should respond. Shaun - Mike's Coin Chest does about a show per month including most of the larger ones, but not all.

I’ve bought and sold several Morgan and Peace dollars from Shaun, and I met with him this past January at FUN. He’s VERY reputable.

If you’re a collector that thinks that coins are commodities (i.e. that all MS66’s of a particular date are worth the same as each other), then you’ll think his prices are high. But if you’re a collector who recognizes that some coins have much better “eye appeal” than others in the same date and grade, and you want higher quality within a grade, then you should be ok paying up for quality.

As an example, I upgraded my 1885 Morgan Dollar via auction. My lower grade dupe was graded by PCGS as MS66+, and it had a CAC sticker. The PCGS Price Guide for 1885 MS66 is $700. Shaun paid me at FUN in January $850!

You might think the value with a CAC sticker made it a lot more valuable than the PCGS Price Guide. Not so! CAC’s Price Guide is only for whole grades, no values for plus grades. But let’s look at 66 and 67. For 1885 MS66, the PCGS Price Guide is $435, and the CAC Guide is at $495. But at MS67, the PCGS Guide is at $2,100, and the CAC Guide is at $1,950. So in my opinion, overall the guides are at a similar level. I think we can agree that Shaun paid me well ABOVE the current Price Guide values! (And this 66+ was not a coin I bought from Shaun, and as noted, my upgrade was not bought from him either!
