Question about $2 1/2 Indian Gold Pieces

Where have all the high Grades, (PCGS - NGC MS63 and above gone)? I know there are a lot of collectors chasing these things, but they have just disappeared. Have most of the NGC graded Indians been Crossed over?

I've been seraching for an MS64 PCGS for over two months... Arguably one of the easiest years to find and have not been able to locate one. This is not a want list, but a point of discussion.

I collect gold but not specifically Quarter Eagles. However, Indian Quarter Eagles in higher MS grades have never been common, even those considered common dates. A lot of the Indian gold coins are AU because of field surface scuffs inherent in the design.

Liberty Quarter-Eagles are easiest in 1902-1907 dates. Mintages prior to 1900 (except for some 1870's dates) are miniscule. I have been watching for slabbed 1890's Quarter Eagles in slabbed-MS for awhile and there just are not very many for sale. I do collect Liberty Half Eagles, many of which have much higher mintages than same-date Quarter Eagles and even these are surprisingly hard to find in MS63 and above.

The spread between the 63 and 64 in a pcgs holder for the so called common dates is very small percentage wise. So most people would rather pay a few hundred dollars more and get the 64 grade if they just want a common date for a type. And the flip side of that is simply the reverse. If I own a 64 why would I sell it just now when it is not selling for a big jump over the 63. And of course due to demand for type sets there are not a lot of 64's for sale anyway. Great one to buy if you can find one. Some dealers list one for sale but if you call, its already sold or some other such thing. Most big dealers dont even list a 64.

In my opinion, there is a major market player who has been hoarding ALL the MS65+ and better date MS64 Indian $2.50. This player has been driving the Greysheet bids up (they are WAY up since last summer), and is waiting for the right time to stage a promotion or let the coins back out slowly. I believe that several 1911-D's in MS64 have been carefully let out one at a time at ever escalating auction prices to help create the appearance of spiraling demand and prices. Due to this (in my opinion) extreme and obvious market manipulation, I would advise against buying Indian $2.50 at this time.

MS-63 and 64 $2.50 Indians are around, but the trick is to find those pieces that have been properly graded. A far number of them, especially in NGC holders, fall short in that respect because the coins have too many marks. I also know where there is a 1925-D in PCGS MS-64 holder, but the coin does not have the eye appeal for that, fairly pricey, grade IMO.
