Sanctuary sale, how went it at Mid-America?

northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anyone here sit through the Bowers and Merena Sancturary Sale auction at Mid-America. Last few Bowers and Merena auctions have resulted in my internet bids being outbid by the floor bidders though this time ended up getting at least one. (Am waiting to hear as to the others.) Was the bidding particularly strong for particular issues? Did the product look good in person? How did seated liberty dollars do over all if anyone recalls.

I bid on and won lot # 2309 three raw $10 liberty's graded ms62 by B&M. I bid on the internet as well and I alway's seem to get outbid so I bid higher than I should have but it was fun going to the show and picking them up. I look forward to the next sale but I think I will stick with the certified coins unless I can get the coins to look at before the sale. mike image

1 of the more pathetic sales i've participated in. didn't win a danged thing - because there was't anything worth bidding on. i mean, c'mon, a whole page dedicated to 1943-d rpm cents? who gives a crap???

totally, forgettable sale, don't give it a 2d thought. in fact, it was a pretty accurate reflection of the entire show, which sucked

  • I bid on three coins for that auction.
When internet bidding closed, I was the high bidder on all three, although, I had to raise my bid on one coin I wanted dearly, since it was growing close.
I then found out that this auction was going to be on Ebay LIVE, so I figured I'd tune in to see if I won the lots.
To my surprise, it grew close on my first coin, but I won it. About a $300 difference from my winning internet bid.
Because of this, I decided to register and at least be available to bid, should the next two lots be a problem, and indeed they were.
The bidding was ferocious. I was surprised. And while I feel I ended up paying a justified amount for these coins, it was far more than I expected. If I had not joined the live auction bidding, I would have lost both of those lots. For one of them, I ended up spending $1,000.00 more than I anticipated.

  • What lots did you buy Mike King?image And by the way...Welcome to the boards

  • I won the only lot that I bid on for what I thought was a VERY reasonable price. Overall, pleased with the pickup.

I probably paid too much for this one, but I really liked it. Opinions would be appreciated appreciated. (I think)image

That was a nice half. Being in a PCGS holder with that toning I'd say you did OK.

I saw the bidding on the SLQs. I bid on one of them & did not get the coin. I viewed all of the MS 66 Type II FH coins at May's Long Beach sale. The type coins, which were nothing special, went for hammer of $1,200 to $1,350, which was to be expected. The nicer material went for very strong $; re the coin I bid on, it went for above trend (yes, it was nice).

I have to disagree with Karl; there was quite a bit of nice material in this sale. I would have paid more attention to it, except for I am working on very specific items for my type set.

Legend's report on the Sanctuary Sale referenced not a lot of top material as included. The consensus that most of the good stuff on the floor disappeared before the show opened to the public - did that result in the buyers not sticking around for the auction? It appears that more internet bidders got stuff this time than usual. Was the weather lousy and no one wanted to stay for the auction or was it the hot dogs made out of furniture coasters that encouraged many to go home early? How filled and active was the auction room compared to recent auctions at Long Beach, FUN, etc.?

I bid on three raw, circulated rare date gold coins and was outbid before internet bidding was completed. I find it very difficult to bid enthusiastically on gold coins that are unslabbed--it is essentially sisht-unseen. I wish that B&M, a sister company of PCGS< would get everything slabbed for their auctions, so the potential buyer would no exactly which are the probelm coins. The way it is now is like Russian roulette!

Robert, I think if an expensive coin in an auction is not slabbed it has problems that will keep it from getting slabbed or it will slab lower than expected. mike
