I didn't get sick, but my interest changed. I stopped the PCGS copper, nickel, and silver type set and started my own slab collecting, focusing on sample slabs.
No, but I've started new sets just because the old set was filling in so slowly - good coins just aren't as available as they used to be! If your a collector at heart, you gotta buy something regularly to satisfy that craving
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.
Every year or so I change focus. I was pushing at 2 cent and 3 cent pieces for a while, and then worked on lincoln cents (finished that one), put together a Franklin half set and a short set of Walking Lib Halves, and now I'm focusing on a complete US Type. The only constant is my 1872 year set. I think that changing around what you do keeps you fresh, and allows for some variety. I'm sure that I'll stop worrying about the complete type set for a while, and then work on something else. Since I'm not selling off anything, but only setting it aside, I can always come back. I've been thinking about collecting English pennies and seeing how many different Kings and Queens I can get. Hey, quirky little sets is what makes this a fun hobby!!
Robert Getty - Lifetime project to complete the finest collection of 1872 dated coins.
I started DMPL Morgans then stopped. Then I started FB Mercs then stopped. I started Gem Buffalo nickels then stopped. I didn't stop because I lost interest in the coins. But it did seem to me that I liked the nicest one best and the others didn't quite appeal to me as much. So I started a type set. Well that was taking a long time and I did want to finish a series. So I started, and finished, a set of proof Jefferson nickels. Now I am back at my type set
I started a MS roosevelt set, and bailed out when I found the market too tight and decided to resume collecting proof washingtons but this time went for color and not high grade.
I also decided to give up collecting ex-wives, and the next time I get married it will be the last time, so Im being very careful now.

I think I can ditto this entire comment!
I find I start getting "the itch" if I haven't purchased a coin for a month or two. When that happens I usually go to a local coin shop and buy "something" just to satisfy my need.
Yup.... I would say "the itch" is the enemy of many a collection. A local barber around here who died recently was known for his collections..... He would collect ANYTHING. Coins, Comic Books, Pocket watches, Knives..... He would collect until things would begin to get slow and then he would sell his collection all of a sudden and start something totally new to him.
I have started my Franklin mint state set about 7 times. Each time I tell myself to spend that money on my dollars instead.. Someday I will finish that set Larry
