There are a lot of lurkers here.

cladkingcladking Posts: 28,307 ✭✭✭✭✭
...or infrequent posters. After playing around in the archived threads and the old
boards for a while it became apparent that there are a lot of people who stay very
current, but don't post. Saw lots of names I didn't recognize with recent last visited
dates. A couple were today.

It would be great to see them come back to posting since some of the posts were
very good.

I was thinking of posting a thread about lurckers and how many just do that mostly now.
The old days threads were quite lively as I remember.
    Ah the good ol days.

It was a PM last night across the street that got me to thinking about this
and going back looking. Some of these guys could hardly be described as
newbies. Several did seem to be mostly modern collectors though. I gave
most of them ratings of "ten".imageimage

Hey, I guess you could call me a Lurker.
Camera takes lousy pics, scanner scans slabs blurry and I'm not to knowledgeable to offer any opinoins except for a "nice coin- - or great pic". I'm just good at asking opinions or comments. Finally getting back into collecting after many years off.

I think the below paragraph sums up this boards for me. This was a email I sent to a fellow board member who was nice enough to help me out with a question I had.

<<Thanks again for all the info.
I read the boards everyday and I'm glad there are so
many knowledgeable people out there(like yourself) who
are happy to share what they know. They might not
realize it but I'm sure there are a lot of people(like
me) who just read away, learn, and have saved money
from making buying mistakes which makes the hobby more
    enjoyable.>>

    Again thanks all,
    Tom

There is no reason to be shy. We on this Forum are just your typical

flesh tearing meat eating raptors.Oh, there might be a handful of nice

plant eaters like Mark around, but for the most part, we only devour

enough to fill our emotional needs.

I always stay logged in to this site. If you do that, do you appear on line to everyone else even if you are on a different website or when your computer is off?

  • I don't say too much as I am just getting back into collecting and I can learn so much from all you pros. There's an old saying I like to live by "better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you don't have a clue, than to open your mouth and prove it".

It would be great to see them come back to posting since some of the posts were very good.

I agree however if they are lurking because they don't have anything to contribute, they should stay lurking. My suspicions are that most
of them have something to contribute.

(I think contributions can be termed as multi-faceted - entertainment, humor, personal attacks with tongue firmly in cheek are all
contributions - in addition to other non-traditional contributions - to making this place a cool place to be, so don't think you have to be a
numismatic guru to contribute......at least in my book.)

One guy i'd like to see post more often is Greg Bingham. He's a neat guy who has some really cool coins and has been around quite a while.

I'd also like to see Greg, Jim and Steve post more. Jahearthat? (Although i understand why they don't - if David and Carol would kick a few
of the "right" people off the board, we'd probably have a few more gurus posting. Non-tongue in cheek personal attacks can grow
    very wearisome.)
  • Lurking is a lot easier than contributing. Lurking is not a bad thing either. While lurking you never get you head torn off because someone has an ego the size of Mount Rushmore. Lots of Rushmores on here. I just sit and read a lot of the time.

No. After a period of inactivity - 15 minutes I believe - the forum software shows you as logged off.

    lurk mode = off;

I tend to stick with lurking these days because most of the posts are about board politics, slabbing, and environmentally damaged silver (read: toned), all subjects I'd rather stay quiet about. When I do see Lincoln cent related posts I generally kick in my two cents worth, but those threads are rather uncommon.

The Cleveland Centennial is an interesting coin. At first look it looks like Cleveland is getting stabbed by a spear or an arrow. Actually its a compass needle pointing to Cleveland. Reminds me of the Ohio state quarter where at first glance it looks like the astronaut has been hanged. Must be an Ohio thing.

I too do not post daily. I perfer to provide thoughtful comment. The series I stick to are moderns and are frequently maligned. I do not contribute more due to my employment. While a majority of you are professional collectors, dealers, or retired, I am fortunate enough to have a job. I often post threads only to see them sink to the bottom and forgotten without as much as one reply. And no I do not ttt the thread. If more of you frequent posters would quit belly aching the negative things there might be less lurkers.
