Silver eagle white spots

Hi, I was putting togther a pcgs silver eagle ms69 set mainly off ebay.
some have those "famous" white spots from the mint wash.?
I wonder if those can be cleaned and if they take grades up or down ?
also any other info about this coins is interesting.

    Welcome to the boards!

Most of the white spots - or 'milk spots' as they are commonly refered to as - cannot be dipped or cleaned w/o damaging the coin.

Here's a Big Fat Welcome to Ya!

My understanding is the spots can not be removed. However, I have never tried. They apparently do not effect the grade as shown by the following scan. I keep this coin as a reminder that grade does not necessarily equal eye appeal.

  • That 94 should have been sold to PCGS when they were selling for $300 or more! One little spot and they knocked my 94 and 96s to MS68 from 69!

  • By the way, Heating them sometimes removes the spots!
