How many classic comems in your collection.

Do you have the full set?

What would the value be for a mostly complete set?

I know a Grant w/star and the Hawiiaan are tough. What are the other hard-to-get-at early commems?

How tough the set is depends of course on whether you are trying to build the 144 pc set, or the 50 pc set.

For the 50 piece set, it will be much more difficult to build if you are looking only for undipped coins, and even more difficult if you are trying to assemble a set with very attractive toning. There was an interesting post a month or so ago listing which coins are the most difficult to find with attractive toning, as it varies very significantly by issue. Attractively toned Columbians or Oregon Trails are not so hard to turn up. Unless you like the yellow-ochre that is common on Hawaiians, these are not easy to find with nice toning. Personally, I have had a lot of trouble finding a really nicely toned Albany. I have a complete 50 piece set, and have been gradually upgrading, and replacing some of the dipped coins with original ones. Thanks to several board members, I've made some very nice additions over the past several years.

Regarding the 144 piece set, a real challenge is to assemble a set where the coins for a particular date are "matched", that is, stored together in the original packaging materials for many years, and therefore with similar toning. Several board members have 144 piece sets, and several other members and former members (Greg, RIP) are working on them. I would be very curious to hear input on which matched series/dates are easiest to come by. At the moment, living in Japan, the 144 is too much of a challange.

    One. A nicely aged Columbian.

I bought it because my wife noticed that it has the birth year of her grandmother on it.

How's that for a reason to buy a coin? image

Value cannot be measured in dollars. This one will not be sold.

I have the complete type set of 50 coins. They range in grade from MS-63 to 66. They are under my name accross the street in their registry, and there are photos of all the coins.

Some coins have been dipped; some are totally original and some are "original now" (dipped many years ago an now retoned.). Any of these situations can result in attractive, collectable coins.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Zero, but I think four or five of the slabs in my reference collection have classic commems in them.

I've got only one in my personal collection. An Oregon Trail half dollar I found with my detector. There's a small gash on the Indian's knee, but otherwise , it's an AU-ish coin. And it came out of the ground looking pretty nice, too- only needed a little soap and water to get the loose dirt off, no dipping necessary.

Probably not what you were asking to hear about, but, hey- it was free! It made my day!

I've never collected commems, not out of any dislike for 'em- I like them just fine- but I just never accumulated many. I've had the Stone Mountain, Columbian, BTW, Washington-Carver, San Diego, and the Pilgrim at various times and in various grades ranging from EF to MS63, both raw and slabbed, but I guess you could say I never had any serious commems.

I have the 50-piece set complete "The Overland Trail" collection, 9th in the registry. I also have 4 NGC proof-like commems--92-Columbian, 37-s Boone, Rhode Island, and a Roanoke. Hard to find the NGC PL coins. Not to many in existance.
