DoS attacks??

Dog97Dog97 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭
Last night my puter tried to network with another server, "blackhole" in California and then my dsl crashed, came back on, and crashed again. Still down.
So today I'm on a dialup puter and getting pinged in waves from weird places like Hong Kong, Poland, India, Canada and all over the US. What's going on here?

    No it's not OT LucyBop because it's really interfering with my coin stuff on the board & eBay which is about all I use the www for.

  • Dog, if your PC tried to network on its own you have SpyWare on your PC and its actively Spying and trying to send out your information. Go to Google or any search engine and look up AdAware. Its freeware, so download the latest version and install. Run this full scan on everything. Delete everything it finds. The first time I ran it I had 86 hits. So much for AO-Hell security. Most of the Spyware was theirs, the dirty rats. Next go search for ZoneAlarm. Its a freeware personal firewall. Install and set it up so everything on your PC runs OK. This will require some hit or miss settings and letting ceratin things like Explorer acess the internet all the time. This software will effectively block those trying to Ping your PC. It makes you invisible. Back when I was on AO-Hell I once got pinged 286 times in a 20 minute session. You used to be able to go in free and see who was Pinging, and I was astounded to see sites from all over the globe. Of course, many were AO-Hell owned and operated. You can set ZoneAlarm to run on start up so its always there and active. You need to run AdAware manually and I do that once a week. If both of these fail to clean out your bug, you may need professional help by someone who can go into your Windows registry and seek out the kernel and other junk thats been embeded in there to reinstall and/or reactivate this junk. Good Ruck Rover....

  • Dog go to the address below and try this program , has worked for me. Also what window version you using? If XP make sure your firewall is enabled to block attacks.

    Hi Dog;

    You are the victim of a Denial of Service attack. In most cases a firewall and the most current patches are what is needed to thwart such an attack. If you do not have a firewall you may want to go out and purchase one post haste. I do not recommend a software solution as it does not provide the system isolation I like to have. Also, run the automatic update if you have a windows system. Be aware that there is a vulnerability in the RPC end point mapper and updating to later code will fix this but will also cause COM calls to be malformed and fail under heavy loads. This only applies to you if your system is a Webserver that is hosting a web application. DoS attacks occur when a person runs a scanner and identifies your system on the net with a static or near static IP address. This is frequently the case when you are a DSL or Cable subscriber. There are other options available to help prevent being the target of an attack. These may be beyond the scope of this discussion. PLease let me know if you would like further information on this topic and the potential fixes to it.

    Kind regards,

    Dan Watson

    That's good info guys!
    I use those programs, both pretty good. SpyBot digs a little deeper than AdAware but AA is fine for most spyware.
    I'm behind ZAPro. Probably what happened was last night after I lost my connection remenants of Mail Washer, an anti spam program I use to have, tried to connect when my connection was restored. It still has files in windows/application data. MailWasher is spamcop.com aka blackhole which was probably updating it's blocked spam site list.
    I'm still getting pinged from Mexico, Turkey, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Brazil is hitting me a lot. Mostly on ports 25410 & 1041 which are file sharing ports so I may just be getting random pings but the events of last night makes it look suspicious and I thought a dos might have killed my dsl server.

    This is OT. Saying it interfers with your coin stuff can apply to anything. You want people asking question on how to fix their car (so they can go to the coin shop), what's the best phone rates (so they can call their coin dealer) etc?

    kieferscoins-
    If anything your post is OT, not to mention troll like.
    If you can't contribute any useful information on why I can only access this board in a text only format on dialup when I have a top shelf Dell with a dead dsl connection sitting across from me then don't post to my thread.

    This is a real job! You would be amazed at the number of people who come under these attacks and never know it. Since everyone seems to think they know what they are doing they all try and self medicate. This is not always the best way to handle things. Dogs post was ON Topic. Stopping the these types of attacks depends on installing and configuring the correct hardware and software. These are not DOS boxes any more and can be highly complex. The issue that Dog is experiencing is not even a Windows problem. Its a networking problem. The fact that most people want to add software to this issue to remediate it tells me that they do not know what they are talking about. I could find a handful of OT if I wanted to. But Carol would need some real help moving the threads. INstead I spend my time reading and working with COM, Application Center, Clustering, Network Load Balancing, SQL, DB2, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows NT, Cisco routers, firewalls, fireboxs, and a plethora of OT stuff I usually do not drag out here on this board. All the while I have to endure to lemon head hawking thier wares on ebay from this board, or ranting about a deal gone bad, or some other OT drivel that any adult would have otherwise figured out is a useless waste of time.
