Are we getting a little paranoid or what?

"Don't take a picture of me?"

Stay home if you don't want people to know what you look like.

Unless of course you're known for owning really, really expensive coins.

And then you should have a oriental body guard who knows karate or wears a top hat that can double as a saw to cut bad guys
in half.

I'm just wondering if giving a few bucks to an organization and not a business entity would revert a show into a private function. I thought the door money was a contribution to the coin club presenting the show. The table cost is to help pay for the rent or lease on the space.

They might not like their picture taken but they better get used to it.

With the latest/greatest digital camera and phone equipment, it makes it easy to take pictures of people who are unaware.

If you are out in public, you are fair game. Those who have been taken to court have won on freedom of speach decisions. (Those individuals took very 'revealing' images.)

No, I don't own either digital camera or phone nor would I take pictures of others intentionally without their approval.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

I can certainly understand someone who carries around large amounts of cash and rare coins not wanting his/her picture braodcast to thousands - millions without their permission. Granted the argument Adrian makes is fair, but yet there are security and safety issues involved. Theft, assault, kidnapping of someone's children.

Not to sound paranoid, but this world has some really sick and twisted people. Privacy is a big concern to some. To each his own, if you want to post a pic of yourself naked holding a ANACS slab covering up your privates, be my guest. But if you would rather not have your pic posted on a forum such as this standing in front of tens of thousands of dollars in coins I think that is fine as well.

Regardless of whatever laws might (or might not) apply and whether some question if there is a security risk involved, why not respect the privacy of those who prefer it?

I personally knew at least two coin dealers who were murdered (for their coins). And, I know of others who suffered the same fate. Please be respectful of dealers or collectors who have security concerns, whether you think their fears are well founded or not.

I will post this to the other thread(s) on this subject.
  • mdwoodsmdwoods Posts: 5,549 ✭✭✭
I agree with coinguy1. It is okay to show coins, but I would never show anyones picture who didn't want it shown, or who's permission I didn't have. It sucks, but there are crazies out there who just look for ways to rip people off.

Ok, Ok. Yes, i think it would be unwise to publish a picture of a coin dealer without their permission and yes security is very important.

I guess I just don't see much of a difference between sitting behind a table with a bunch of coins where you can be seen by the whole world
and a picture of you behind a table with a bunch of coins.

Having said that, it's true that at security check points and the like, they don't want you taking photos.

What an odd request, not wanting your picture taken/shown because you are either a coin collector or a Dealer.
Think of this: Our President has his photo taken everyday and there are probably a few more people intent on seeing harm to him than a Coin Dealer. I know, I know, the President has the Secret Service at his disposal and this example is extreme, but many other controversial politicians don't.
How about Cops? Their photo/video is legally taken and I'd imagine they build up a few disgruntled fellow citizens who would like to see harm befall them. No?

I've NEVER heard of a case of ANYONE in the coin field being stalked or harmed via a photo of them posted on a bulletin board or chat room.

It's good to be paranoid- when it actually protects you and/or your loved ones, but it is easy to allow yourself to endulge in a selfworth that is out of porporation to reality.

By the way, while we're on the topic of security, i think it's unwise to announce that you are going to a show or repeat that somone is,
and i usually don't do so, for security reasons and i ask that others who know of my intentions keep them private.

Security is indeed very important. But, if somone wants a photo of you, they're gonna get it. Yes, publishing one can make it easier.

I personally would not disrespect someone by taking a photo against their will.

I do think being considerate of others is important even if we think their reasons are lame as hell.

I've known several extremely wealthy people in my life ($50+ million net worth) and from discussions I had with them, they are very paranoid as a group. A couple even had weapons hidden around their home in case of a home invasion robbery. I saw one which was really great, there was a revolving part of the wall next to the tub with a secret latch. If you were in the bath and someone broke in he could push a tile on the wall and the wall would spin and reveal a 2 handguns and a shotgun strapped to the back part of the wall.

If I had that kinda of money I wouldn't want anyone to know who I was or what my family looked like.

correct me if I am wrong but why be paranoid about a photo on the internet when you are standing behind a table with a boatload full of expensive coins? If someone really wants YOUR stuff they will get it. I do not entertain paranoid thoughts and it seems that I live a life where I am not worrying about someone taking advantage of me.

I try to look at the positive things instead of focusing on negative things, sure makes me sleep good at night.

This is about the most silly thing I ever heard. If I was going to cause harm to a dealer or scope out the security I wouldn't search the internet for pictures, I would simply pay my dollar, walk right out on the bourse floor and get a GOOD CLOSE UP LOOK at you.

Here's the real reason.....and it all makes so much sense.....Am I the only that has figured this out?image

The Feds use the coin hobby for hiding all the criminals in the witness protection program. All these scumbag criminals are given new identites as coin dealers. They easily blend in with the lowly dealers. I'm not suggesting here that all dealers are lowly dealers. You know the ones I'm talking about. You read about them here regularly. You see them all the time at the shows. The mob never would think to look for these guys at coin shops or coin shows. But these guys are scared to death of their photos being posted anywhere on the net cause the mob has software that scans all web pages looking for these guys. Now you know why dealers will stand with their back to you and completely ignore you. These guys are frightened for thier lives. They simply do not want to be seen. Please help them out and do not take pictures on the bourse floor.

    Paranoid.......you betimage

Fortunately, there is no one here on these forums that has ever seen me or knows what I look like as far as I know, so I can travel to large shows with complete peace of mind that I will not be targeted for the $12.00 in my pocket.
