This 1859 half dime might be called "the affordable Paquet coin." In 1861 Paquet made dies for the twenty dollar gold piece. His work proved to be defective and the coins were recalled. The 1861 San Francisco mint double is a very scarce piece; the Philadelphia mint piece is a major rarity.
Few collectors know that in 1859 Paquet turned his hand to making another business strike coin. This time it was the half dime. Paquet's half dime had stars with hollow centers and Ms. Liberty's shoulders were narrower which gave her a "ship's bottle" look.
Paquet's half dime faired only a little better than his double eagle. It was issued for only one year before it was replaced by the legend obverse type in 1860. Paquet went one to produce the dies for a number of medals, but he never produced dies for a coin that would be issued for very long.
The current offering is an NGC MS-65 graded coin. It has very colorful original toning that is not fully shown on this photo. The price is $1,050.00 + $10 for Registered Mail, which comes to around 10% Under the current bid price, which is $1,175 for the date. Here is an opportunity to own a very interesting coin at an attractive price.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
