Does anyone else rent coins?

WondoWondo Posts: 2,916 ✭✭✭
When collecting, be it coins, baseball cards, advertising pieces, etc., I have a habit of putting together a collection and then when complete, disbanding it in pusuit of another challenge. This usually takes one to three years. Typically, it turns out to be a break even project - a hobby that pays for itself. I get to have fun, own some really neat stuff, and feel the thrill of the hunt. Am I alone?

I frequently buy coins just to learn about them, and then turnaround and sell them.

I just sold sets of Barber halves and quarters I put together. They were lower grade sets, didn't excite me, so I figured why keep them any longer. I did keep the 3 Barber Q keys, for now...
  • I have purchased hundreds of coins, just to get a good look. I usually return them or sell them. image

All coins are rented. You can't take them with you.

Yes. If it is a beautiful coin that isn't part of my core collecting interests, I may buy the coin to enjoy it for a few months and to take some nice scans for my virtual collection. I end up selling it and have the memories and the big fat scans I made for myself.

I have known a number of colletors who do this (complete a collection and sell it), but I'm not one of them. I enjoy the owership as much as the purchase. Yes, there have been some coins that I lost interest in and sold off, but most of my completed sets are still with me after all of these years.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Agree with Andy. K
  • I agree with BillJones. I hate to give up coins which I liked enough to buy in the first place.
  • I never sell: coins, baseball cards, stock. buy and hold. i have so much stuff around, i trip over it.
Here's to it and to it again.
If you don't do it when you get to it,
You'll never get to it to do it again.
