Back from the TNA show and I've got to thank Bryan from TBT for letting me work his table for a while and "seeing behind the curtain". Met a good many board members - ccrdragon (thanks for the update thread), tonekiller, jbstevens, construct, KeithDagan, Spooley (yes, the one and only), Rella, dpoole, Anaconda... it was like a family reunion.

I did some buying. Boy did I!!! Decided to blow the bonus money on a keystone piece for my gold type set. But we'll work up to that. From low investment to high...

1937-S Buffalo in MS66. Really cool color - Blast white on the left half on the obverse spreading right to a rich gold. The reverse has the same rich gold as the far right of the obverse except for a white patch running down from the "AM" in America through the E Pluribus Unum and into the Buff's midsection. Full luster, very pretty.

1943-D Merc in MS66FB. Nice splashes of color caught my eye. Upper right is blue-green with light purple below it. Reverse is similar at 6:00.

1853 No Arrows Half Dime AU58. Looks MS65 except the knee run is a killer so accurately graded. Blue toning with magenta irredescent center. I have to thank Adrian / Anaconda. I was looking at the coin early in the show should have snapped it up. When I ater checked on it, Keith Dagan said that Anaconda had just bought it. In fact, he had made a commitment to buy it but had not yet taken possession. Adrian brokered it back to me for a next to nothing fee. An excellent gesture and I love the coin.

Also found a coin I have been scoping for a several months, ever since my end-of-year bonus. 1799 Eagle in NGC MS61. Great piece of history. An absolutely no-problem coin - not a single meaningful mark. Lack of luster and a modest strike on the bottom right (no denticles, 50% stars) make this accurately graded as a 61. I had the on-site ANACS free consultation give it a once-over and he graded it a 61 also. Got a sweet price on it too.

Love the coins. I would show you my purchase, but I really don't feel like messing with my digital cam right now. I rememeber seeing that 1799 eagle at the show. I was curious what they were asking for it, but dared not ask, considering I knew very well I wouldn't be buying it.

    Congrats on your new coins.

Wow, I love the 1799 Eagle. You have a much larger coin budget than me. That coin is worth 4 times my used car! NGC already graded it MS61. NGC is good with gold. I wouldn't even have anyone from ANACS look at it.

    Jarrett,
It is unlikely that you saw this 1799 unless you were there really early. I came to the show at 9:00am Friday morning to help with dealer setup. I found this coin and bought it before 11:00am Friday from a wholesaler, 2 hours before the show opened to the public. There was another 1799 there in MS60, no where near as nice as this one (IMO) and the guy was asking $1,000 more than I paid for this one. In fact, a dealer offered me $1,000 over what I paid for this one but decided to pass. Adrian also had a 1799 $10 in his case that was an ANACS MS61 but it was already sold prior to the show. In fairness, Adrian's coin was nicer - better strike and surfaces. Honest shot 62.

    Merc -
Way more than my budget too! My #2 coin is a $700 1907 Saint in 63. But I was rewarded for some hard work this year and didn't expect the money. When I got some nice support from my wife to take the plunge, I decided you only live once. I let her pick my target coin between a 1799 Eagle and a High Relief Saint (I've wanted one of those also for over 20 years). She liked the history of the older gold and I'll admit, I do too. It will be a LONG time before I get this deep into a coin again.

    Blade,

Really happy for you man!! Glad that you splurged. You certainly shouldnt regret it. Great coins. I really like the eagle. Looking for one of those for my type set as well. Enjoy the coins and congratulations again.

  • Very neat coins, Blade. Thank you for showing the eagle to me over lunch Friday.image

I found a 1900 quarter eagle in NGC MS-62. A very nice coin at a very good price to complete my twentieth century gold type set. That pretty much blew my budget for the show.

Today I picked up some raw coins--1852 dime (VF-35), 1877-CC dime (G-4), and 1877 half (VG-8). The grades on these raw pieces are conservative guesses. I'm afraid I usually grade a little hard. They are nice, no problem. Okay, I'm sure the 1852 dime has been dipped, but it's a very attractive piece.

Sorry, I can't take pictures of them. I have neither scanner nor digital camera.image

an old coin dealer in town that i used to visit back in the early 1970's
    he started in the 1930's
    passed away in 1983

he once told me that basically any coin you could name in the federal series has walked through his doors since the 1930's
with the exception of early pre 1834 gold

I don't remember which one I saw, but I was at the show a little before 11:00AM. I probably didn't see the one you bought though, because I thought that one looked a little nicer than the one I saw (however I only viewed it for a minute, so I can't remember).

I hope someday I can afford a coin like that.

Here are a few of the recent purchases for me. So recent I got them yesterday. I've gotten to really like those blazing mercs! The mercs I've been getting lately are so blazing it's hard to even get a good picture out of them. Anyone got good merc photo tips?

    Jonesy,
I was waiting for someone to comment on that Buffalo. I've never seen one like it - really striking in person.

Purchased this at the CSNS show - tough date to find fully struck. PCGS MS66.

    Robert,
Great early half eagle! Is that an overdate on the 3?

    Tom,

Yes it is, the 3/2 overdate. I think that's the way most or all come from 1803.

I like your $10 a lot! Great coin. Any idea which holder, if any, your eagle will end up in? And idea what the pop figures are for it? I am surprised by how many of the 1803 half eagles are in existence, 317 from PCGS alone. Some day I would like to get an 18th century eagle. Congratulations. It sounds like you had a fun show (no pun intended).

    Robert,
It is currently NGC MS61. I have a PCGS type set, but am getting so many nice NGC coins that I am having trouble deciding if I should keep it. So I may try to cross it to PCGS, but if I do I will only try one time. So far I am 4 for 5 on getting my grade NGC to PCGS - all crackouts. I won't crack this one - several thousand $$$ between AU58 and MS61.

NGC has graded 314 1799 $10 in both types. MS61 is Pop 40 with 131 higher (top are 3 in 65)
PCGS has graded 550 1799 $10 in both types. MS61 is Pop 23 with 141 higher (top is a lone 66)

So there are plenty out there.

Blade, it amazes me how many of the early gold coins are around. Perhaps one of the experts will weigh in on this. I might start a thread on the topic. When you consider that there are about 400 1878-CC $20's out there and 100 1884-CC $5's (two "rare" coins that O own), why is it that there are so many 1799 $10's (800+)?

Technically not a show purchase, but from the Central States Bullet Sale. Reverse has rainbow rims fading into light blue, with golden center. Obverse has rainbows along the rims, with rainbow toning along the neck area and an untoned head.

    imageimage

TNA show purchase from Anaconda. Very strong strike for a coin 199 years old and in wonderful condition.

I picked up a few new patterns at Central States. Here are my favoritesimage
    image
    J73 original
    image
    J168 original

The J73 has to be seen in person to fully appreciate. It is impossible to capture the colors in an image. The image of the 168 is very close to the actual coin.

Saw the first coin (at least I think I did) and the last one (you don't forget it when people show you coins like that)...both were very nice. I picked up a few coins at the show too...bad thing is that only two of them will be staying with me for any length of time. This is my third favorite that I got (fav is pictured in a set reg thread and second fav is loaded into photoshop right now):
