86 proof set

First of all I would like to say hello to every one! I am new to collecting and have learned quite a bit from this forum. That being said my question is about a 1986 proof set that I have. On the penny the s mint mark appears to be doubled and on the dime there is clear doubling on the back of the ear and on the back of the neck.I cannot find any info on any errors for the 86 proof set and thought maybe someone here could help. Thanks

  • Thanks for the input michael. Yes the top serif is doubled. also the doubling looks like it is missing the lamination. pretty cool if it is a double die!

    machine doubling.

  • keets, I dont think that the picture shows it as good but there is clear notching on the upper and lower serifs. It is my understanding that this is one of the key traits to hub doubling. Could you explain why you think it is machine doubling so I know what to look for in the future.

Looks like machine doubling to me, too.

An actual doubled die would also be raised. Machine doubling has a shelf-like appearence.

I think I got that right. image

The third picture looks like machine doubling, but the first two look
like the real thing. May be a trick of the light.

    hey Travis

you should certainly do what Ken and others have suggested and seek out the opinion of an aknowledged expert in addition to that of members. i once sent an 1898 IHC to member Shylock after posting a thread about it and he forwarded it to Rick Snow to get anther opinion. after it's cross-country journey, the coin made it safely home. do whatever you need to do if you feel you have something, but it appears to be machine doubling for the reasons explained above.
