picture of my infamous worst horror story coin up at Heritage auction [link by Von Zipper] thanks

The 77 cc seated quarter that i recently had to sell, along with some of my other coins to raise some cash is now owned by Heritage and is being sold in their up coming long beach signature sale.

I have no vested interest in this coin since i sold it back to Heritage, but for anyone interested in looking at the pic, its on there site now.

I still love looking at this beauty, but to this day i can't decide if this coin is original or dipped & retoned also the mark that i had mentioned in the grade gaurentee submission , while small is plainly visible next to the second star from the bottom on the left. this was the only one of the coins i just sold last month that i didn't sell to Mike Printz.

What's your opionion of the coin [please post a link here for people to look at it. Thanks, Les

The image is too dark to really get a good look at the coin. Also, with most toned coins, it is nearly impossible to get a good gut feeling re their luster / eye appeal.

i would need to see this coin in person to be sure

but from the scan it looks like

a dipped coin blast white coin that was not properly rinsed

and you can see the ugly golden/yellowish/brownish secondary toning that for me does nothing for me and is negative in terms of eye appeal

the way the toning is is like when you wash dishes and do not get all the cleaning residue off the plates and then leave them to air dry

you get this sort of trickle down splotchy mottled look just like with this coin

also the center devices of the coin do not have this toning as it is just the rims and inner rim area that has this splotchy mottled type of seconday toning again caused by an improper rinse job

with all the tell tail dip residue/improper rinsing colors to boot

again just from the scan but i am almost positive but again to be sure!! i would need to see this coin in person sight seen to confirm this but all we got here is the scan!

    Barberlover,
If you don't mind me asking, how much money did you lose selling back to Heritage?

A general question: does anyone ever make any money by selling back to dealers?

Looks like it was dipped a few years back and now is retoning. Even if properly neutralized I think you will still get this brown pattern years later. But of course, an up close look in person is the only true way to tell.

I sold an NGC Proof 66 Cameo Trade Dollar to a under 20 year old student (who is now at MIT) about a year and a half ago and bought it back from him for something like $400 more than what i sold it to him. Poseidon is his name. He is a forum member here.

Bryan O. (TBT) made about $10,000 on a coin he sold back to me.

As i've said before, 1400 dollars, my single biggest hit in over 35 years of collecting. Les

Nothing to the scale of Adrian, but I made a little money one time selling a monster toned dollar back to the dealer I purchased it from. I bought it when rainbows were not as popular and later needed the money.

As others have mentioned its tough to make a call about cleaned/retoned based on a photograph but the coin looks like it's got nice luster. Sorry to hear you had to part with it (been there, done that). Hopefully they'll be a time down the road where you'll be in a position financial to search for a replacement that's just as nice image.

Based on the scan and my experience with actual seated liberties quarters, I feel the toning on this coin is not due to improper rinsing after being dipped. Te coin does not look dipped, and the toning does not appear dull. I'm not saying the color is spectacular either, just that it looks very natural to me. Further, the single mark at 8 o'clock alone should not disqualify this coin from its lofty grade. But, if the luster is not very vibrant, then the coin should have been graded at the MS66 level.
  • The coin looks as original as plenty of other coins I've seen called original, and it looks a heck of a lot better than plenty I've seen that were dipped. Certainly it looks market acceptable as someone said above.

Did you sell this one to Heritage because Mike Printz didn't like it and/or didn't offer you much for it?
