this may sound a little morbid ( WTC gold coins)

but i was searching SAE'S on ebay when i came across a company called capital investments selling $5 and $10 gold coins supposedly from the world trade center horde graded by pcgs. he only shows the obverse in the slab . no reverse shot. my question is arent the pcgs lables suposed to have a serial # on them. being that i cant see the reverse to see if there is the pcgs hologram lable.
i would have posted the link to the auctions but i have no idea how to link.i wanted to get 2 for my kids but dont want to get scamed. i know some of you will probably think this is gruesome but i wanted to get them something from that day so that they will always remember . sorry if this post offends anyone.

The problem I have with these coins is that they have been sold for amounts beyond the usual price for similar coins that were not part of the WTC tragedy. I hate to see people profit from the WTC tragedy, for that reason I would never purchase one of these coins at a premium. As a free market advocate, I’d never want to see such sales banned, but I would prefer to remember the WTC through a commemorative book about the history of site or something like that.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • If (and only if) the purchase of one sent the entire proceeds to funds for the benefit of those who lost loved ones, I'd buy one.

I gave blood, I gave cash to the benefit funds, and I sold a good chunk of my collection for the benefit funds in the official eBay auctions benefitting the funds. I will never forget.

    I will never forget.
  • The WTC coins do not have a serial number on them.

Originally, Universal coin and Bullion out of Texas had the exclusive on these and a pretty good portion of the proceeds went to charity.

Apparently, they couldn't sell them all and the rest were sold to a bunch of opportunistic sleazebags who are profiting nicely.image

Correction, the ORIGINAL ground zero recovery coins slabbed by Collectors Universe using PCGS shells did not have serial numbers. They also do not have grades on them, just "Gem Uncirculated". These were, at least at first, sold by dealers that were advertising that a portion of the sale price would go to the relief funds for the families. Several different types and dates of coins appeared in these holders.

The later ground zero coins slabbed by PCGS DID have both grades and serial numbers, also a barcode but the barcode is hidden behind the hologram. At first this series only consisted of MS-69 2001 gold and silver 1 oz eagles. After about six months suddenly all kinds of dates, types, grades, and special "limited editions" started appearing in the PCGS ground zero holders. I never saw any of the PCGS ground zero slabs being sold by anyone claiming that part of the proceeds were going to the families. Probably because by the time they came out most of the fund raising was over with. (The PCGS version came out about 8 months after the attack and all the varieties and limited editions more than a year after the attack.)
  • thanks to all for your input. i think i will just buy my kids some nice gold eagles at normal prices and leave the WTC stuff for someone else.
