Funny Question Overheard at the Ol' Flea Market

TootawlTootawl Posts: 5,877 ✭✭✭
I went up to the flea market this afternoon. A have a friend who has a table of coins. While I was looking over the Morgan's, I noticed a guy, about 18 or so, who was looking over the selection of Whitman folders. He was looking at the Indian head cent folder when he noticed some numbers below the date. He asked my buddy (the coin dealer) why certain coins were worth 10.3 million dollars and others were worth much more.

My buddy told him that's how many were made, not how much they were worth. image

One could ask the same sort question of a person who will not pay $25 for a coin in an MS-67 holder but would pay $2,500 for one in an MS-68 holder.

The scary part is that you don't have to go to a flea market to find such people. They are on the Internet, which usually means that they have enough intelligence to run a computer. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • No one is all knowing. There are no stupid questions. Cut the guy some slack. After that, ask him if he wants to buy some Indian Head cents from you. Gino

I've had the same question asked of me at least twice, over the years. image

Back in my days as a flea market dealer, I once sold a really nice nickel 3c piece to a guy. Nice by flea market standards, anyway- the coin was a nice EF-AU. I was thinking to myself, "Wow, at last, somebody who has good numismatic taste!"

Then, after paying for the coin, the guy said, "Yep, that baby ought to shine up real good with a little Brasso!", or something of that nature.

Only about a month ago, I had a young fella (probably 18-20 years old) visit my mall booth with his girlfriend. Looking through my case, he saw some irregularly-shaped ancient Roman and Greek coins. He called the girlfriend over and said, "Look, honey- coins made by drunk people!"

  • Over the past few years I have done many, many Flea Markets. The most satisfaction that I have ever gotten wasn't from a sale.

There were two incidents, one over some uncirculated '64 Kennedys, and the other was over some EF Morgans. Both people had bought those same items from "The Coin Vault," and when they saw what I was selling them for compared to what they paid, they asked, "How can you sell those so cheap?" I told them that my prices were on par with what they're worth. They said they were going to send the ones they bought back.

    I LOVE IT!!!
