Why is it that a little problem with a coin when you buy it.....

....is all you can see once its paid for?
I have purchased a few coins that had everything going for it, save for one minor flaw. Yet every time I look at the coin all I can see is its flaw. I know a lot of you feel the same way. Why does that small flaw bother us so much? Are we just anal? Is it the money? What is it?

  • I can relate to this, but in a different way...

It's like getting a great car, but all you can see/hear when you drive it is some flaw or problem with it. There's a poor fellow on another forum family of mine that really is upset about his new Beetle because of some small things. I don't blame him, really, perception is a large part of what we humans are.

    Bustman-

I can't explain why, but I do the same thing.
  • The solution is to buy coins with enough flaws that you can't single one out.image

We all do, to varying degrees, and for various reasons.

It's human nature. Novelty wears off. Honeymoons end.

If you're lucky, you'll still love your coin after the honeymoon is over and you've seen her in the harsh light of morning.

    perception is everything

i think this coin this buyer
he or she really was on the fence about a specific coin and was thinking about it too much,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, asking themselves should they buy it or not?

    basically

that tells me something as when i think that about a coin THEN I PASS ON THE COIN****
    IT IS NOT FOR ME..........

i think that collectors buy coins that they do not love at first sight then the coins only get worse not better as they own them

if you first see a coin and within the first 5 seconds you do not absolutely LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
it does not walk and talk and sing to you

then the coin IS NOT FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!
    DO NOT BUY THIS COIN********************

    sincerely michael

I also go by the 5-10 second rule, and it works for me. Yet,, there are pieces that I like with the flaws, for the fact I may never own one again. Sometimes the flaw can be a little fun.

If it's fine example your looking for and you settle for less, then dealing with the adjustments with either price or rarity (scarity) is part of the hobby. We all would like to own the best.

The answer is to always have the same date or type coin in a very low grade. It's amazing how the grade of the other coin skyrockets when you have them side by side image

Bustman - When I buy a coin, I always look at it for eventual sale. That way, any annoying

defects become apparent. Even doing this, I make mistakes in buying a coin that has

a defect that annoys me. When that happens I usually sell the coin. Collecting is a very

personal hobby where the only person you must please is yourself. Bear

I think it has more to do with one's outlook on life.

A good friend used to say about some people that they looked down the highway and all they say were broken up boulders. image

Hey, I made my OWN !!!!

When I was a iggerant newbie, I got a seated Lib prooflike (not proof) half. It had a .....lil....ol......hairline in the field.

In fact, it looked like an ERASER would take it off purty good.

    So............yep...............AAAAAAAGH.

Just TRIED it........very small area. Hardly anything.

BUT THERE IT WAS.............THE BEAUTIFUL SKRITCHY SKRATCH OF AN ERASER.

Fortunately, some time consuming tedious CAREFUL rubbing with the edge of a very worn walker with the rim almost ROUND turned it into a minor ........uh.........contact mark.

BUT........whaddya think I looked at every time???????

    3 guesses.

It's simple...while you're driving home from the shop/dealer/etc...the coin sprouts more marks, fingerfrints, haze, etc. It's an unexplained phenomenon....image

I often find that I over emphasize a problem with a coin. When I see it another time, I wonder what had me so worried about it.

If something really strikes me as problem as soon as I see a coin, I usually pass on it right away and don't give the piece a second thought.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
