Greysheet/market value help

I am having trouble determining a good price to pay for a PCGS PR-63 CAM three cent nickel. Does anyone have an idea what one would go for/ a god price to pay? Thanks for any help.

Forget to add the date. 1866. Sorry.

Grey sheet prices do not reflect Cam or Dcam status. Sheet prices are based off raw material data. Watch the major auctions and you will find that on certain coins the sheet goes out the window.
I try to buy mine at 50% off PCGS price guide unless the pop is real low!
Hope this help because this end of the market is a crap shoot!

    Cameron,

The Heritage Value Index may be your best guide on something like this. I believe it is around $700 for that coin.

I didn't think they traded that high. Sheet is only $250 for a pr/63. Depends on how much of a premium you put on the Cam designation. I wouldn't add $450. Depends on the coin I guess. Let us know what you find out. image

the problem is that i need to see the coin in person what is the eye appeal like? toned or blast white or somewhere inbetween? near miss or really not a cameo? or a solid cameo or just made it?

but i guess in a proof 63 holder usually but not always the copin is hairlined noticeable and very distracting st least to me and also banged up i am surer there are exceptions to the rules but it could range from a buy price of 200 to 700 depending on the look of the cameo and many other factors but usually this is what i call a collector coin ALSO with little demand in this current market i doubt it is close to 700 and unless a total dog more than 200

for an average coin with average eye appeal and just a ho hum cameo for a proof three cent nickel then maybe 350 375 retail for the coin usually cameo 1866 are decent cameo coins as it is one of the most common dates in cameo but without seeing the coin i could write volumes and it is meaningless now show me the coin and in 5 seconds i can tell you exactly what it is worth in this current market

i guess it is really hard to tell for example i saw a boone once and sheet on the coin is around 550 some i saw i would not even want it let alone pay 550 or 450 another coin i saw someone bought for over 3000 and it was a bargain coin as it was a total monster and the buyer could have sold it after he bought it for more than he paid for it

but be that as it may the above is my guesstimate on the coin

    sincerely michael

Thanks Michael. I haven't seen the coin either, but was offered it for $360.00

$360 sounds about right. The one thing you have to make sure of with three cent nickels is that the coin is SOLID. Those can be a little tough to sell, when that time comes, but if it's a nice coin.........no problems. image

    Different date/grade, but for reference...

I paid $460 a year ago for an 1880 in PR65. The coin looked CAM, but was not designated on the holder. I sent it in with a batch and got the CAM added. Type ask for a PR65 is $400.

Here's a slightly fuzzy scan, but the CAM shows well.

I just checked the HVI on Eureka and it is reported at $689 for this coin. So at least my memory was serving me correctly. However, it looks like the HVI, while usually a pretty good market indicator, failed miserably in this case.
