Welcome me!

Howdie, y'all!

I'm a brand spankin' new poster and am here to introduce myself to the forum. I am new to the hobby, having discovered a Peace $1 from my grandfather that sparked my interest about a year ago. Since then, I've purchased a few books, including the 2002 & 2003 Red books and attended the Charlotte show.

I haven't specialized in any particular coin type yet - I enjoy them all, especially the ones I can't afford to buy. I'd like to put together a set of Peace $1s in MS-64. I also like tall ships, so one day I may try to put together as many coins with boats or ship images as I can find - including world coinage.

Having been involved in the hobby for only a year, I have mixed feelings about the hobby already. I can easily understand why some have left. Still, as long as I'm enjoying it and am staying within my bounds, then I'll stick around. I think if a person is a true numismatist - not in it just to make a buck - then it's a great way to spend your free time.

Okie

Great grade in which to build a set. I'm doing my Walker short set in MS64. If you're patient and careful, you can find beautiful coins at the grade without paying the big price jump that happens going up to MS65.

    Welcome aboard!

Welcome. And don't worry about finding a set, type, or whatever to complete. Collect what you enjoy. Not what anyone on this board or another board tells you to collect.

Welcome. Yes, 64 is a great place to start building a set, not as marked as 63s but not quite gem either.
    Good Luck.

Welcome to the boards. Your idea is of a MS64 set of Peace Dollars is a great starting point. If your into a boat/ship theme you may want to look into the Columbian Expo Commemorative Half. Made for the 1892 - 1893 worlds fair in Chicago. It was made in 1892 and 1893. The 1892 being more expensive and more desireable as a collectible. The link is an example of a 1893 I have. Not the greatest example, but gives you an idea of what it looks like.

  • Glad to have you here!
  • Welcome!!!

Remember.....collecting is supposed to be joyful. A few of my suggestions:

    1. Don't spend a dollar you can't afford to lose on coins.

    2. Find some dealers/members you like and can trust and try to do business with them as often as possible.

    3. Read as much as you can about the hobby and try to join a local club.

    4. Share your love of the hobby with the younger generation.

Practice these four rules and the hobby will always bring you Joy. Try to make money and it will no longer be fun.

    Go well.
  • That advice about staying within your budget is good! I wish I had done that..... Glad to have you aboard.

Okie, if you are interested in coins with ships, I suggest you come over to the darkside, World and Ancient Coin Forum. There are a few collectors over there who collect 'ship' coins. BTW, welcome. I must depart now less some liteness rubs off on me.

    Hello Okie,
My Grandfather got me into as well but at a earlier age maybe. A great Peace set to work on.
If you make progress on this set the coin bug will have bitten you along the way if not already. Once that happens its hard to kick the coin habit. but why would anyone want to? Its not fun anymore? It will be fun forever.
I will post some Peace pics later today enjoying coins. Welcome
