Read in COIN WORLD that there will be a discussion on Society of Cincinnati medals held by a NY institution at the ANS CONFERENCE on May 17th . I have one from 1783 and was wondering if anyone else has one, or any information on them.

I didn't even know Cincinnati existed in 1783. Sounds like a real rare medal. I would love to see an image. Any chance?image

If you have full provenance, you have a VERY valuable item, I would imagine. Not that I know anything about them.

General Lachlan MacIntosh, one of the GA signers of the Declaration of Independence, who was a big name in these parts, was a member. There is a painting of him wearing the medal, I think.

  • I believe the reference is to the Society of CINCINNATUS - not Cincinnati... Cincinnatus was a Roman general who, after his work was done conquering, retired to go back to being a farmer. This was a big deal at the end of the revolutionary war because Washington was the first conquering general since Cincinnatus who stepped down after winning a war. Remember that the treaty of Ghent ending the revolutionary war was signed in 1783. As such, many medals and tributes were made in reference to this deed. And yes - that's how Cincinnati got it's name - Porkopolis came later image

    Thanks for all the replies.

There is a "Society of the Cincinnati" that was formed in 1783. Apparently it had nothing to do with the city of Cincinnati but was named after General Cincinnatus.

There were many "branches", including PA and CT. More research is likely to show others.

Still looking for other info, including the design(s) for the 'ORDER OF THE EAGLE'.

    Thanks
