The commemorative in question was still pretty much a face-value half dollar at the time, so it wasn't as heinous a crime as it seems in hindsight. And it's a rather distinctive way for a coin club to stand out. I've seen these before. They're pretty interesting. For many collectors, a counterstamp can add value rather than the opposite. All depends on one's perspective, and interests, I suppose.

  • That's bad, why don't they just make their own coin to celebrate? image

Pennies make dollars, and dollars make slabs!

....inflation must be kicking in again this dollar says spend by Dec. 31 2004!

Come on guys! Cut the club some slack! Many clubs have issued counterstamped coins.

Besides, the Cleveland is still one of the most common and inexpensive coins in the set.

How about the Stone Mountain half dollars with the state abbreviations and numbers counterstamped on them? They bring big premiums today.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I see your points i.e. value at the time, and it's no different than the elongated cents issued at fairs. It just strikes me that a numismatic club would take a different approach to commemorate themselves.
  • I think that it's a lot more attractive with the c/s than without. Besides the WRNC has a long and illustrious history of which this is a part.

"Potty Dollars" "Hobo Nickels" "Opium Dollars" "Barrio Large Cents" Altering coins has been going on for awhile.

Too me it's a part of what makes this hobby interesting. I see nothing wrong with it.

I do not see any offense like previously stated with an average circulated issue. Also the total quanity of coins defaced clarifies the overall impact. Maybe total qty 5 seems reasonable if more than 100 I do not like it. Wonder how many of this club type were struck?
