This has gotten interesting. Addendum to "mystery box" thread

This is the email text that I got from the seller of the "mystery box". What do you all think?

I wrote:

<i>What if your mystery box only cointains 10 ounces of gold? Dont be a crook... Tell everyone what is in the box or take it off of
ebay... There are alot of people watching how you handle this too by the way. <i>

They wrote back:

<i>Just so you, and those mystery watchers you speak of, know there 27 ounces
of gold. So, as you can see my starting bid was very fare. However, because
of you and others, who keep me-mailing me, who think everyone on e-bay is a
crook I will stop this auction. The coins are going to a fund for fallen
vets here in my home town. I did not want them to begin with. They have been
nothing but trouble for me, and money is not an issue for me in life. It is
sad however, that e-bay has gotton to the point where something which could
have been fun and profitable for both parties has become a mud slinging
contest between coin sellers.<i>

My response:

<i>If that is the case, I apologize. I am active duty military myself. My only question is, if you wanted to raise the most money, why not sell the 27 ounces for spot gold price? You would have made the veterans much happier and more money than 6500. It is sad that ebay has this reputation but the auction looks suspicious.<i>

So, now I feel bad. Should I say 10 Hail Mary's and 20 Our Father's?

  • I think you handled it very responsively.............Ken
  • I wouldn't feel a bit bad. If he was so honorable a person why didn't he mention the intentions for charity. Or was it that he is soooo fed up with people questioning his integrity that he is NOW donating the coins to fallen soldiers to make himself feel better. I'm not falling for it.
Mystery Boxes can be fun at garage sales or your local coin club meeting. I don't see the fun in a several thousand dollar "Mystery...I hope I can rip you off... Box".
Im glad he took it off and Im glad he was called out on it.

  • 27 OZ? Doubtful...very doubtful!! (If you don't buy my Mystery Box, I will donate it!! So there!)

I, too, think this guy still sounds fishy. Especially when he starts adopting that wounded tone of, "since it's impossible to have a good clean time here on dirty ebay."

This guy would offer a $3,000 discount on a supposed 27 ounces of gold?

    Ummmm, sure.

Even if this guy is telling the truth, doing unethical things for a good cause is still not a virtue.

Could be 27 ounces alright , composed of forgeries,

gold plated lead or an outright lie.

Now we will probably never know.image

27 ounces of crap! or for bear jelly donuts!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • If he didn't use the vets line, it would have been "to save the children" or battered women...image
  • It should have been stated that the money was to benefit the fallen Vets fund. Of course, not to sound suspicious, is that fallen vet a clumsy husband that really is a vet doctor???

I like how the seller states "and money is not an issue for me in life". If that's the case, why is he wasting his time selling 20 buck Playstation games Past Sale

You know, I always thought that a person was innocent until proven guilty. Chalk up another to the forum board lynch mob.

Speculation and outright accusations based on little or no proof seem to be the theme for a bunch of folks on this board when it comes to eBay.

<< <i>You know, I always thought that a person was innocent until proven guilty. >>

That's in a court of law.

This is eBay. Definitely guilty until proven innocent. image

  • Agreed, eBay is guilty until proven innocent. Otherwise, you're the one feeling guilty 'cause you ripped yourself off....

I also find (although in this case minimal) misspellings and poor grammar to be giant warning signs.
