1995 "W" West Point Replica at $305 and counting

This private auction is getting out of control. Maybe I'm just jealous that the seller paid $11.00 for the proof.

See what you think.

  • The seller has it private so that no one can warn the poor slobs that they are bidding on a replica and not the real thing - it's seller's like this that create ex-collectors. He knows exactly what he is doing and doesn't have the morals or ethics of a cat in heat! imageimageimageimageimage

The problem is the seller had done nothing wrong, other than being a scumbag! He states in the auction that it's a

    << <i>1995 "W" SILVER EAGLE COMMEMORATIVE PROOF >>

. and lists that it is:

    << <i>Composition: 100 Mil .999 Pure Silver Clad Base

    Base Weight: 1 ounce. avdp

    Diameter: 39mm Silver Dollar Size

    Condition: Individually Struck Proof

    Edition Limit: 2,250

    includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY

The only problem I see is that the title 1995 "W" West Point Silver Eagle Proof *NR states that the coin (if you can call it that) was made at West Point! Let's face it, the seller is a low life and the people bidding can't read!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • i agree people should read and this guy is a big fraud..selling a cheap coin..but his picture sure looks like a real encapsulate silver eagle....seems like a true misrepresentation of an item to me.....
  • Marty is correct. People would still bid if there were 2 inch high letters spelling out FRAUD. Besides, there is a significant portion of the population that can't read, or comprehend what they're reading...Ken

Yes, and this is not the first time we have seen this. Last time the bidders caught wise and retracted their bids. I hope it happens this time too.

Ebay does a poor job of policing this stuff, but given the volume and diversity of stuff they auction, I guess it is to be expected. image

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Four people have retracted their bids. That looks like an original picture of the ASE, if it is would'nt that be against ebay rules?

I E-Mailed the seller and asked if the coin pictured is the coin I will receive and got this response:

<< <i>no it is not a picture of the actual coin. the auction picture shows a little blur at the top of that coin. the actual coin is a perfect proof as stated in the SPECIFICATIONS

on second thought.. he DOES spell it out plainly in the description.... carpe diem

    BUT

Now in commemoration of this special issue, you can get your own 1995 Pure Silver clad West Point Silver Eagle Proof at only a fraction of the original's cost.

    should say

Now in commemoration of this special issue, you can get your own 1995 Pure Silver clad West Point Silver Eagle Proof reproduction at only a fraction of the original's cost.

  • Alright. Enough is enough. I sell reproductions. My ads all contain :This proof complies with the Hobby Protection Act of 1973 and is clearly marked “copy” on the reverse, and or a picture of the reverse which shows copy. If someone wants to bid it up, they know what they are getting.

How can anybody possibly spend $500 freaking dollars on a repro? I have felt guilty when my bids hit $100, BUT I clearly state what they are buying, so I do get over it. All who have purchased and left feedback are satisfied with their reproduction.

This seems wrong, wrong, wrong. This seller is being driven by greed. I just hope that Scamcrook is the winning bidder.

Is this a case for Safe Harbor?

  • I turned him into ebay as selling counterfiet or replica coins without identifying them as such. Send safeharbor@ebay.com the auction number and details on what he is doing. Maybe we can stop him

    I just emailed the seller:

As a long time rare coin dealer, who has acted as expert counsel for the Federal Trade Commission, it is my sincere advice that you end this auction and do not accept anyone's bid. They are being defrauded.

    Just received:

the coin is NOT fraudulent. it is a proof coin made by the National
Collector's Mint. it clearly states in the auction the Specifications of
    the coin.

    thanks,

    stockbidder2

    My response to him:

<DIV>The item being sold is not a coin. To be a coin, it must be issued by a government and have a denomination. You are perpetrating a fraud. For your own legal health, end this auction!!</DIV>

imageWith several of this type auctions running, it appears most bidders are too ignorant to read the complete description! This piece of crap isn't the first, nor the last! eBay should force all copies and counterfeits into a different catagory! If they list it in the description, it gets booted out of any coin catagory! They are doing nothing to prevent this action from stopping!image

  • Now when he relists it with, copy, replica, reproduction or another properly decriptive word, and it goes to $3000, I personally won't have a problem. Those words will be very hard to read between the lines, of course a supersize of the reverse would be good too just for those who can't read words longer than COPY.

Copies of coins should have to say "COPY" front and back. There is way too much fraud caused by these and the companies producing them know it. EBay should also be more diligent in watching for this type of auction. They have been warned enough to know they are a serious problem.

Thanks to the Guardian Angel, whoever you are.
